Is this illegal ?

Is it illegal to purchase antibiotics from a EU country via the Internet if you do not have a doctors prescription ?

Re: Is this illegal ?

I think that it is not illegal, but unwise to do so.

Re: Is this illegal ?

You have to have a doctor PRESCRIBE you prescription medicines so I would assume it is illegal.
That said, purchasing any form of medicine online is (as everyone knows) completely unsafe. You've no idea what you're getting, what it has in it, how it was made etc.
Would you buy viagra online?
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: Is this illegal ?

that would depend on if they were prescription only meds in the country of sale, iirc EU law states the person placing the order has to comply with the national law in there country not the vendor for such cross boarder sales (although that might only be certain countries within the EU this applies to)

I'm sure you'll be able to read somewhere about what's really in some of the illicitly imported prescription medications - http://www.mhra.gov.uk/Safetyinformation/Generalsafetyinformationandadvice/Adviceandinformationforco...

Re: Is this illegal ?

Thanks for the responses, I asked the question because if you are on holiday in some EU countries you can go into a pharmacy and get antibiotics without a prescription .
I certainly take the point that anything purchased over the Internet could contain anything  but if you purchased the antibiotics abroad and returned to this country with them  would this be classed as illegal ?
I think you can see the point I am getting at here, can it be legal to bring them into the country but illegal to get them over the Internet ?

Re: Is this illegal ?

assuming your referring purely to proper pharmacies,
I believe that the law requires you to have a prescription and for it to be unopened packaging in order to legally travel with it, or in the case of a course of prescribed antibiotics that they are in sealed capsules (like most pills these days come in sterile press to release packaging) that you might be able to purchase the item overseas without a prescription is up to local laws,  but you could find yourself needing to though them away if there in the old fashioned pill bottle....

In Spain many drugs only available here on prescription are available there over the counter. It is not illegal, just a different method to prescribing drugs.
There is no problem in bringing these drugs home with you so long as the quantities are sensible.

Re: Is this illegal ?

Out of interest, which EU countries can you get antibiotics over the counter?
There is one antibiotic you can buy over the counter in the UK, azithromycin. However, you first have to be diagnosed with chlamydia and the test kit/drug are not cheap.
