Is all 18+ "Adult Content" Blocked/Censored on Plusnet?

As a staunch Libertarian, strongly opposed to Totalitarian internet censorship, & concerned the UK internet will end up like China's miserable "Great Firewall"...  Cry
Can I ask if Plusnet have started blocking what they deem as websites unsuitable for anyone below age 18? I have been with TalkTalk for 2 years receiving very poor bandwidth speeds (+ rising prices!) so I decided to switch to Plusnet (waiting for router to arrive), but during my last 2 weeks of TalkTalk i've suddenly been subjected to a heavily censored form of Commuist-esque internet! So my question is, if Plusnet have started rolling out Call-Me-Dave's Orwellian dream of a censored internet, how can I opt-out as much as possible? I have looked on my Plusnet account options for over half an hour but could find any option to opt-out of the Nanny State censorship which makes me feel so sick to my stomach! Do I have to call Plusnet and personally negotiate with them that I don't want the Camoron's fascist filters?

I've not noticed any site suppression by PN, but there again I'm such an innocent.
Which site were you trying to access?  Wink

Well that's good news! As I say i'm still on the terrible TalkTalk for a few days until I get my Plusnet router.
And it was just a community web-forum, like this one, only more Libertarian.

Ok thanks, so looking at my settings below, if I leave the Plusnet Firewall off, my internet won't be censored?

It's good to hear PN doesn't restrict your browsing Mav, but is it true they'll start doing so in the near future?   Huh
I just found this horror story online!  Undecided

Broadband ISP PlusNet has confirmed that it intends to follow BT’s example (parent company) and launch their own network-level Internet filter to block (censorship) adult and piracy websites, which will most likely replace its bundled McAfee security solution.

So far nearly all of the markets largest fixed line broadband ISPs, under pressure from the Government, have introduced voluntary network-level filtering (i.e. the ISP controls the blocking system on its own network) and given or will soon give their customers an “enforced” option about whether or not to keep the service enabled (i.e. the box is pre-ticked with “Yes” but you can still select “No”).
The filters are designed to block websites that feature adult or pornographic content, as well as an often absurdly wide range of more generic categories (e.g. dating, social networks, beauty products etc.). PlusNet has also suggested that the same technology might be used to “block all websites engaged in online copyright infringement where ordered by a court to do so” (so far the ISP has not done this but most expect them to follow suit).

So this means investing in the cost of a foreign VPN.

Q. What will my ISP see when I'm connected to your VPN?
A. Your ISP will only see a secured encrypted connection to one of our remote VPN servers.
They won't be able to decipher your online activities and make sense of your internet traffic.

Interesting suggestion vilefox, but I can barely afford the internet anyway, let alone playing a premium to use a foreign VPN!  Cry

Re: Is all 18+ "Adult Content" Blocked/Censored on Plusnet?

The network level filter is Camerons "porn filter" which you set to On or Off, ideally off as it isn't just restricted to adult content (and really it's a parents responsibility to make sure their kids are not watching porn, not the ISP's!).  PlusNet (and pretty much every other ISP) do have a list of restricted content (the IWF filter) but that blocks content classed as child abuse images/videos, thankfully it's not opt in or out, it's always on.
From what I recall (I haven't required to check) the Porn Filter is "opt out", so it could quite well be that TalkTalk have turned the filter on so you're blocked unless you switch it off (no idea how), PlusNet will probably have to have it set up eventually which would require opting out.  Some websites which host copyright infringement material can also be blocked by PN's parent company, BT, which gives a message "this site is blocked" so you just go to google and find another site, it's super effective /sarcasm Smiley
