In the days before gadgets

I was just preparing my tea (dinner) which included mashed potatoes and was thinking "what did we use to mash potatoes before these type of gadgets appeared...
because it seems to have been around for ever.
What other small scale culinary techniques have been modernised.

Our spud masher must be at least 40 years old - probably used a fork prior to that

If you go looking around the kitchens of stately homes... I am sure you will find them there. so must have been around for a couple of hundred years... (possibly since the first spud came here !! ! !)

Think it is actually a parsnip masher.
But probably not that old: Parsnips were one of the European staple root crops before potatoes came along.
Dental care was not really 'invented' until 1800's so 'soft food' was essential.
