In the days before Woke

Daughter number two out of three popped in Saturday last and as a 'special treat' for her old Dad, as well as an early Fathers Day pressy (a much needed new straw trilby) she had also bought me a Guardian newspaper as she knew I used to read it.

Not any more, only in the days before Woke but crikey just as well as it's now £3.20 for the Saturday edition and on checking, £2.20 for the daily!

Mary Jesus and Joseph that's what, over fifty quid for a month's worth of newspaper.

And to think my old dad used to buy the Daily Mirror for something like 3d... and you could also wrap your fish and chips in it, wipe your bum, or even use it to draw the fire if it started to go out.

At least it really did woke you up! I must admit I felt the same with seeing someone buy a box of cigarettes. It really was a case of how much!!!!! I must be getting old.

Ever helpful. Grin Sure, I’d love to help you out. Now which way did you come in?

Re: In the days before Woke

I wish I knew want woke meant.

All that I know about it is that I must never publicly say what I really think over an enormous range of subjects, the extent of which apparantly has no bounds.

You are not the only one who does not know what woke means.

I agree with your second sentence

Re: In the days before Woke

Woke means my wife receiving fashion catalogues with clothes worn by models that do not match her Nordic blonde ancestry.....

P S It was called The Manchester Guardian when my parents had it delivered.

@Baldrick1  @Thumper

According to Wiki     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke

Woke (/ˈwk/ WOHK) is a term that refers to awareness of issues that concern social justice and racial justice.[4] It is sometimes used in the African-American Vernacular English expression stay woke. Woke resurfaced in 2014, during the Black Lives Matter movement, as a label for vigilance and activism concerning racial inequalities[5] and other social disparities such as discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community, women, immigrants and other marginalized populations.[6]

Woke has also been the subject of memes, ironic usage and criticism.[7]###

But ... I still don`t understand what it means.....  Sad

Re: In the days before Woke

In short @shutter  it means being awake/woke to matters that easily offend.

The original has now hijacked by the unreasonable and opposed by the unconcerned.

And the new kid on the block? Well that will now be 'pandemic' which from here on out will be used at the drop of a hat to mean anything from a sneeze, a sniffle or a snotty nose.

You heard it here first. 😁

That's more being 'PC' isn't it?

To me, woke is being concerned about social injustice, racism, homophobia etc to an unreasonable degree, often doing the cause more harm than good eg taking the knee before a football match.

Granted, a Venn diagram of PC folk and woke folk would pretty much be a single circle.

@198kHz

Could be, the lines between are certainly blurred.

How many sectors can a Venn diagram have?

Not enough. 😃

Which is odd because the first i heard of the term Woke was after the death of George Floyd a year or two back. Before that i'd never heard the word used to refer to anything other than having opened ones eyes in the morning.

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
