Image inversion Puzzle

I was looking at this post http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,141789.msg1251436.html#msg1251436
It has an image attached.
Looking at the PNG thumbnail it looked a bit odd until I realised it was upside down with the OR arrow top left.
Clicking it to show the full size JPEG and this was the right way up with the OR arrow bottom right.
I can't recall ever seeing the thumbnail and full images being 180o of each other Huh
Is it just me or do others see this?

Inverted here. (chrome + Privacy badger, although disabling it makes no difference)

Re: Image inversion Puzzle

I'm guessing that the photo has been edited to rotate 180 degrees, some photo editing software 'keeps' the original embeded so edits can be reverted and different renderers are reading the original or the edit inconsistently?

Re: Image inversion Puzzle

It's to do with EXIF rotation/orientation metadata. The photo was taken on an iPhone, which like a true camera saves the photo 'as the lens sees it' regardless of orientation, in this case the image was taken 'upside down'. The phone uses its orientation sensor to automatically add EXIF metadata to the jpeg on image rotation (in this case rotate 180), which software viewers/browsers commonly read and apply, some programs like Photoshop let you apply it or ignore it. The full image is therefore 'upside down' and should be rotated by the web browser when the metadata is read and applied, though some aren't doing it. The thumbnail (png) cannot contain EXIF data, probably this is generated without applying the rotation.
