Illustrious?

Apparently is on its way to the Phillipines according to ITV news just moments ago.
I thought the trio of carriers had been scrapped? - Invincible, Illustrious and Ark Royal? - Do we actually still habe one of the mighty trio in service?

the retiring of Illustrious expected in 2014, Royal Navy aircraft carrier usage will cease. It will only restart with the commissioning of one ship of the under-construction Queen Elizabeth-class.

Re: Illustrious?

It also says "November 14th 2013 Prime Minister Cameron sent Illustrious to the Philippines to support in the aid following the recent Typhoon."

Re: Illustrious?

I thought the Harriers that were based on Lusty had been decommissioned, and that lusty has been redesignated as a helicopter support ship, hence us not having a carrier in service as such.

Re: Illustrious?

I think I heard on the BBC news that it's being used as 'mobile airport' & also for helicopters to check out the disaster areas

Surely thats not going to scrap too?  Shocked
**** me this country really is a mess. On a positive note, I'm glad to see we still have one of the trio still in service. Shame it's no longer got any might / harriers but at least we still have it.

I think it's this one : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Illustrious_(R06)

By eck, there is actually good news there:
Quote
The UK Ministry of Defence announced on 10 September 2012 that once she is decommissioned Illustrious will be preserved for the nation.[4]

It seems that they're finally getting the message.
Well done MOD / David Cameron. This is a step in the right direction. Now just give me a call on my mobile and I'll happily give you some more advice on how to turn this countrys mess around.

Re: Illustrious?

So back in 1998 when I was reading about it online, what ship was it that was supposed to be launched around 2002?
