Re: If you`ve received a smartphone or tablet for xmas

bear in mind that it's free to use, but will incur a cost as it uses data if you're not in WIFI at the time.
so if someone sends you a photo and you look at it when not on WIFI then it will use your data allowance on PAYG.

Err, you could enter them yourself?

Where is the convenience then? - Whatsapp reads the phone book and then uses those numbers and names to put you in touch with other whatsapp users. It's quick, convenient and doesn't even need an account /.password.

Don't forget that there is also WhatsAppWeb which can make messaging easier if using a Laptop or PC especially for transferring pictures and documents from them. It's simple matter of going to the website above and then selecting WhatAppWeb within the Phone app and pointing the scanner at the code displayed.

Of course the phone must be kept on with a data connection for this to work.

The web version is frighteningly fast too - scan the code and your contacts are on the pc screen before you can even look up!

There's something to be said for websockets vs ajax

@7up

You are missing my point, it's not about "convenience" it's about choice. Why should we be obliged to share personal information?

You do have choice, you have the choice to not use it if the terms are not acceptable.

Oh dear, let them eat cake.... or brioche if you want to be pedantic.

Maybe we have all entered a world where privacy is not possible, which is the point I am trying to make and one you are choosing to disregard.

Let's leave it there eh?

I'm not disregarding anything.
You can have privacy should you want it.

Privacy on the internet?

Tell that to the likes of Assange, Snowden, Manning (Bradley or 'Chelsea'), Putin, GCHQ, the CIA, and Uncle Tom Cobley.

Sure, there are ways and yes I've heard of such things as the Darknet and The Onion Router but for mere mortals like me, it's not quite so easy and other than opting out completely it seems. Crazy2

You do have the choice - use your normal SMS app or another like skype instead. You don't have to use whatsapp but BY DESIGN the way whatsapp works requires access to your phone numbers etc so that you don't even need to signup and your other contacts are made available to your straight away if they also use the service..

Well I must be on a different planet @7up

You mentioned about convenience and then revert to my point about choice so sorry, i just don't get it. Maybe I should just switch off and pull the plug..... but then I'd not be able to chat with you nice people. Smiley
