Ideas to encourage active participation in a forum

I know this must be very old hat to some of you, but ....do you have any ideas to encourage active participation in a forum? Roll_eyes

I ask, as a Newbie because some feedback, I have read is not positive and helpful, so please don't shoot the messenger Smiley and lets mention the Elephant in the room, if its helpful to improve unhelpful comments.

I you want to encourage user interaction there is nothing better to make a post (in General) that can be subject to a pun or a double entendre. So I'll give you one to start.

Just try being contentious, controversial and argumentative.

Informative also works  Thumbs_Up

So long as it is a good-natured fight then I find such threads entertaining. But when the tone turns nasty I start to wish there was an 'Ignore/hide this thread' button.

Choose and chose give me endless problems.

I never know which one to choose so I chose choose.

Funny how some words we can never get right.

My old mum would always spell Surrey (her home county) without the letter E and could not get it right even after I bought her a copy of Oklahoma!

Not only spelling but also pronunciation.

A young family member of mine used to pronounce Cathedral as Thacedral.

Whenever we passed Sheffield Cathedral on the bus I would point to it and ask her what it was...much to her annoyance.

Re: Ideas to encourage active participation in a forum

That reminded me of a favourite series of books. In one death is taking a break so someone gets roped in as an apprentice of sorts. After seeing a few people die and watching their respective souls zoom off in different directions its explained they are going to the heaven and the afterlife they believed in. The next on the lists soul briefly appears then dissipates into nothingness. What happened asks the apprentice. That was an atheist says death.
