ISP average speeds wrong

a report from which says Overall Which? claims that British households are paying for broadband services that are on average 51% slower than CURRENTLY advertised

Next week a change in UK advertising guidelines will mean that broadband ISPs need to start promoting “average download speeds” (a MEDIAN measured at peak time 8-10pm) on their public packages

Re: ISP average speeds wrong

Better very late than never with those advertising guidelines.

ISP providers having been trying to pull the wool over our eyes for years now. Lets hope they comply - otherwise it'll be legislation followed by compensation for false representation.

See what I did there? Smiley

Re: ISP average speeds wrong

My Skoda Fabia has an "up to" speed of 160mph....  !

however, the "average" speed  is more like 45 mph...given that the "legal limit" in the UK is 70mph.

and this is unachievable from a standing start at the traffic lights...( despite my best efforts  ! )..

in reality, my "mean" speed is generallyu about 57 mph, which ( being a "mean" yokshuman) returns the best M.P.G.

Re: ISP average speeds wrong

Which? lost all credibility for me when they released their own speed test a year or two back and it wasn't fit for purpose.

Until FTTP is more widespread (where you DO get the advertised speed) broadband speeds will always be variable due to the laws of physics!

Re: ISP average speeds wrong

@Browni

Must admit you are right there about FTTP.

Mine is well within the speed promised by Plusnet - so not all bad then.

PS. According to Einstein, Hawking and others, you can change the law of physics. Apparently. Wink

What hope is there when we have a population who can’t understand what ‘up to’ means?

Re: ISP average speeds wrong

@Browni

Those 'up to' inclusions in advertising are there to mislead and yes, we've all been taken in by them and if there was no issue, then why are various organisations pushing for change.

Ambiguity in advertising might be de rigueur for some, but it's like a garden pest for many.

Re: ISP average speeds wrong

From @Browni link i like this post Thumbs_Up  very apt i thought

RevK of AA wrote some horrifying stuff about this in his blog, revk.uk.

He pointed out that as well as playing with wording and statistical choices, ISPs could just segment their set of users so that they could quote crazy derived stats making them look ridiculously better than other ISPs just by choice of the data set and choice of calculation methodology. You just have a 'Turbo deal' and only put the users with the best lines on that 'deal', so giving you a subset that looks stunning. A grammar school amongst ISPs and lines.

It would be so easy to make the Speeds look better Roll_eyes

Re: ISP average speeds wrong

BT have been guilty of that recently by offering a 'free' upgrade to users whose speed was over 40Mbps Roll_eyes
