I'm no world champion but......

I'm no world champion but even though I say so myself I'm quite good at stone skimming.
Maybe I'm not up to the standard of the current world champion and my throwing arm may be a little rusty but I'll still give them a competition.

Re: I'm no world champion but......

I can never walk past a lake, river, etc where stones are around without attempting some skimming.
Pretty good at it if I do say myself.

Re: I'm no world champion but......

Call me Pet(Barns Wallis)lew. Could never resist having a "Ducks and Drakes" only trouble is flat slightly convex stones are not often found around still water in lakes, and sea shore skimming is much harder. An old friend insisted he used an ice-hockey puck on Lake Windermere and achieved a reputed 14 bounces but its unconfirmed with no witnesses, think its a bit like the one that got away!!
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: I'm no world champion but......

I reckon I’m pretty good at Ducks and Drakes……but I think that bloke would beat me hands down. I’ve got the idea of technique, low, slingy, whippy arm action combined with a flick of the wrist.
How well spread is the name ‘Ducks and Drakes’ for skimming stones? I remember whilst growing up in Warwick I was the only kid calling it that and assumed that my mother had brought it down from North Yorkshire and I’s picked it up. Now, my kids appear to be the only ones locally calling it Ducks and Drakes!

I don't recall the name being used when I grew up in Worcestershire.

Never heard it before today but I'm originally from London. Probably a rhyming slang for it Undecided

I remember the name ‘Ducks and Drakes’ also knew it as 'stone skipping'. I was never any good at it.

Re: I'm no world champion but......

In theory girls shouldn't be able to do it as they don't have the right throwing technique.
Edit: Not that it reflects on your post above journeys, just bad timing Embarrassed

That probably explains why I've never found a girl who can reflect my enthusiasm at skimming or even wishing to give it a go.
Only two weeks ago while on a short trek in the mountains near AI-Petri we came across a lake surrounded by pebbles and stones. It was far too much and I couldn't hold back any longer. SWMBO wasn''t best pleased with me lagging behind while I searched for suitable 'skimmers'. In my rush I only managed 4 'skims' Sad
