Hypocritical or what?

Read this... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-40668083

Part of her job is " work in mental health care in part involves looking for the signs of radicalisation in young people ".
She was questioned for 30 minutes (a whole 30 minutes - Wow!).
To be honest, looking at the title of the book and the cover, if she was sat near me on a flight I'd be a bit wary of her.

Re: Hypocritical or what?

I believe the current UK Threat Level is Severe so under such circumstances I think the actions of the cabin crew were reasonable.

The counter-terrorism police naturally took the report seriously and acted accordingly.

Personally I think she should move on.

Not to make light of it, but just as well she (or anybody else for that matter) was not reading The Anarchist Cookbook.

@chenks76

"then that says more about you to be honest"

Not really, @rogadodge was just being honest in a dishonest and dangerous world. It was on a Thomson Airways flight remember, not Syrian Arab Airlines.

Apology? I don't think so.

Re: Hypocritical or what?

It's not particularly clever to be wise after the event. Where terrorism is concerned its foolish and deadly.
The cover and title are somewhat ambiguous at best. Obviously the security service were extremely happy to let her go but they were doing a difficult job -damned if you do and damned if you don't.
To say 'It's says more about me' is somewhat insulting really. It implies either that I am an idiot, or I am paranoid. The latter I am not, the former is a moot point. But at least I am honest.

so reading a book about syrian art and culture is enough for the person sitting next to you to jump to the conclusion that they must be planning on blowing up the plane? as that's essentially what they are saying, why would would they be "worried".

Re: Hypocritical or what?

I'd be more worried if I saw someone reading a book titled "How to blow up a plane" by O. B. Laden...

Re: Hypocritical or what?

Imagine if she'd been up to no good, the cries of, "Why did no-one spot this etc.?"

Remember the young Muslim women who travelled to Turkey to join ISIS?  Our border guards were condemned for not stopping them.  Young women go on holiday together all the time; can you imagine the accusations of racism if they had just been going on holiday and been prevented from leaving the UK just because they were Muslims and were going to a country bordering Syria?

Re: Hypocritical or what?

@chenks76

I hear what you are saying but in some ways fear of terrorism is like a fly buzzing in your ear and one that gets louder on a plane. The fly does us no harm and we know that, but the buzzing does serve to provoke a reaction - even an unreasonable one.

We all respond differently and whilst you might score low or even zero, others will score far higher. Me, I'd be around five out of ten in that situation - unlike the cabin crew who went for the full ten out of ten and reported her. So maybe that tells us more about you than it does about others.

An over reaction on their part maybe, but I'd give them that ten out of ten for doing their job on my behalf.

Re: Hypocritical or what?

Thomson need to adjust their training then, as clearly this person was targetted because she was Muslim and reading a book about a particular country.
one wonders whether a white person would have had the same experience if they were reading the same book.

so was it the book that was the issue or the colour of her skin?
I suspect that skin colour came into the the bad decision that was made.

@chenks76

Been here before this sort of thing and it was probably a bit of both but tell me, you are walking down the street late at night and a person or persons are walking towards you. From their appearance, is there anything that would make you wary and cause you to cross over in order to avoid them?

I'm guessing there is or if not, you must be living in some pink fluffy 'look how fair and liberal minded I am' world.

A liberal outlook adopted to make us feel better about ourselves (and appear to others if we are honest) like Socialism only takes us so far in this life, and that's a fact.

Re: Hypocritical or what?

now you're making up scenarious that haven't happened.
however if a person (of any colour) was walking towards me at night reading a book then i wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Re: Hypocritical or what?

But such scenarios have happened although not to you maybe, but they have happened. Was it too much to ask that you imagined one?

Security staff, police, and in this case airline staff are expected to make these sort of judgements rightly or wrongly and their jobs would be just about impossible otherwise. Try asking one.

Here's another one you might like to think about;

Person A) Brown skin sat on bus with package on lap

Person B) White skin sat on bus with package on lap.

One of them has a bomb..... which one would you choose, bearing in mind that fly in your ear and if you get it wrong - then boom!
