Re: Hurricane Irene

Of course it does. Point is people die in storms all the time.
I have been in storms in the US many times, trees down power cuts flooding, it is not unusual.
The whole thing with Irene was political.

Re: Hurricane Irene

But deaths by hurricanes in the USA should be zero as people can evacuate the affected area.

Re: Hurricane Irene

@Nadger,yes the death toll seems to be rising as the storm moves up the seaboard.
The initial cost of the hurricane has been estimated at $25bn and this is bound to increase. This figure doesn't include insured losses. Very sad for all the people who have lost their homes.

Re: Hurricane Irene

Useless information, Katia would have been called Katrina but this name was withdrawn at the request of the USA.

They do not repeat names especially so soon after having used them before.

Re: Hurricane Irene

Lee is currently a tropical storm and is sitting off Southern Louisiana.
Katia could regain hurricane status again later today.

Sorry @Artmo but if you did any research you will find that they do. They repeat I believe every 4 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Irene_%281999%29

Retirement of Katrina name
See also: List of retired Atlantic hurricane names
Because of the large death toll and destruction of property along the Gulf Coast, the name Katrina was officially retired on April 6, 2006 by the World Meteorological Organization at the request of the U.S. government. It was replaced by Katia on List III of the Atlantic hurricane naming lists, which was used in the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season.[154]
