How long should software/hardware be updated

Just over 4 years ago I purchased a newly released bit of hardware at £240 which worked fine on Win XP.  I am now about to upgrade to a Win 7(64bit) PC and am told that the manufacturer will not be releasing any updates to enable me to operate it on my new PC.  I can buy an upgrade for about  £70 if I send my old machine back.  Am I being unreasonable to expect a free update like many other  manufacturers do?  I also believe the old version was still on sale a year ago. I will not have the ability to run XP mode on Win 7.

No you are not being unreasonable. I guess they have done this to get people to buy more of their hardware but if you did what happens in another 4 years time as the next version of windows may not work with that either.
Might be useful to mention what the hardware is as others with the same problem may have found a way around it.

Re: How long should software/hardware be updated

Depends on what you buy really.  For that price it sounds like it'll be a video card, if it is a video card then you don't need to get drivers from the manufacturer you can just get generic drivers from ATI (AMD) or Nvidia.  If however it was a specialist piece of hardware, there could (should?) be drivers available for Windows Vista which if you run the drivers in compatibility mode you can install.
If you want XP mode on Windows 7 you need Ultimate or Professional version, or you can dual boot Windows 7 and Windows XP.  Without more information on what the hardware actually is though, it's difficult to give proper advice.

These links might help ? -
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
Windows 7 Compatibility Centre
Alternatively you might consider changing to Linux and abandon the never ending Microsoft update and upgrade cycle !  Wink

Although if it is a specialist bit of kit of some sort, he might find it even harder to find Linux drivers for it.

Isn't the questions really:-
Do I need to "upgrade" windows?
or
Does my PC do the jobs I require without the "upgrade"?

Re: How long should software/hardware be updated

I have been astonished by the fact that each version of MS Publisher seems to be incapable of opening files written in eearlier versions. I nearly had to keep Win 98SE going just to overcome this problem. Win 7 wanted me to buy the new MS Office suite which costs nearly as much as the new laptop, but I downloaded Libre Office and stuck my tongue out!
