Re: How intelligent are flies?

True story from the 70s and I can even name the cafe.

Bought a cheese and tomato roll and it tasted a bit iffy. Checked inside and found mould on the tomato. Took it back to the counter and was given another - but checked it again after I had sat down only to find a dead fly in it and no, I didn't eat it anyway!

We don't know the half of it, honestly.

Re: How intelligent are flies?

I once bought a pack of sliced chilled ham for making lunchtime sandwiches.

After a couple of days I was halfway down the pack when I lifted a slice to put on my bread and there was a dead bluebottle fly.

It was months before I could bring myself to buy any sliced meat again.

Perhaps they can sense your intent "in the air" somehow. Their survival depends on leaving you alone when you get the fly swatter. You got to figure that humans are only about a million years old - flies are over 300 million years old. They could be pretty darned smart.

Re: How intelligent are flies?

As a home brewer, there is nothing wrong with the poo of yeast - it all depends how you process it. Not that I would but the Japanese have been using human waste in their gardens for centuries. Give me horse droppings every time!

Consider the 'water off a dinosaur's back' argument where.... "Unlike humans, who have been on Earth for a tiny fraction of the 186 million years that dinosaurs ruled this planet, the beasts were here far longer than we have ever been. In that long span of time, it is very likely that the dinosaurs have drunk all the water available back then, and all the water available now is simply water that has passed through a dinosaur's kidneys making its way through the never-ending water cycle"

You could of course go nearer in time and distance and pay a visit to your local 'water treatment' works. Wink
