First £1,000 rail fare criticised

The UK's first £1,000 rail ticket has been described as "scandalous" and "appalling value" by opposition MPs.
The first-class return walk-up fare is from Newquay, in Cornwall to Kyle of Lochalsh, in the Scottish Highlands.

Funnily enough when bored a few months back I tried to find Britain's most expensive rail ticket, and found it was exactly that one – except back then it was £900 and something. I always thought it was a bit peculiar that it was the most expensive ticket though; for example, one would think that Penzance would have been more expensive than Newquay as it's further from the destination. But no. Huh

Re: How Much!!! is a train ticket from Nequay Cornwall to Kyle of Lochalsh

Is that single or return?  Roll eyes
just done a route on google maps...... Newquay station to Dingwall to Kyle of Lochalsh
mileage is 763 miles..... journey time, (not allowing for "comfort" stops, traffic jams, accidents, severe weather, or tractors with trailers, or "shed draggers") 13 hours 34 minutes
(the routing via Dingwall, is to be as close as possible to the railway route.!)
( the above time for the route is by car..... time and mileage are different when walking...... mileage 853 miles..... time  "about 8 days 17 hours"..... don`t know if this includes overnight stay at hotel/b&b or meal breaks ..... !  ) Cheesy

thought that Newquay had its own Strip, where does Ryan Air go to?  as far as KOL, there is a strip just over the bridge on Skye, have seen it but dont know the capacity, it between the road and the beach near the turn off to the ferry

And a train from Glasgow to Kyle is about £40 return. Not sure if First Class is available.
And factor in the taxi from airport to station in Glasgow.  Wink

Re: How Much!!! is a train ticket from Nequay Cornwall to Kyle of Lochalsh

it amazed me that a return to manchester from chetserfiled in the week costs £16 but when i went on staraday they bumped the fare up to just over £20 and what did i get for my extra fare, certainly wasnt 1st class thats for sure.
nope the same two coach train pulls up with a 1000's people on it and for a hour and half packed in the door way with 30+ other people and to top it off when we got to sheffield one of the ticket blokes dived in pushing every to the point of breaking ribs and stamping on a poor toddler all to get in the coach and open a window.
the tollders farther nearly laid the punk out for being so rude.
what gets me is they put the fare up on a busy day yet they didnt use the extra money gained to add a 3rd coach  Angry
so where does the extra saturday money go ?

Re: How Much!!! is a train ticket from Nequay Cornwall to Kyle of Lochalsh

It looks to me like you were sold the wrong fare on Saturday ASBO – an Off-Peak Day Return is £16.70 and an Off-Peak Return (i.e. for longer than a day) is £20.60. Their only restrictions apply during the week, so both are valid on all weekend trains. Why you were sold the wrong ticket though I do not know. Unless you were staying in Manchester overnight? If so then it was the correct ticket. Huh
