Helicopters - Chinooks ready after eight-year delay

Quote
The first of the Chinook Mk 3 helicopters bound for Afghanistan have arrived at a military base in Hampshire after an eight-year delay.
The two helicopters - refitted by Boeing at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire - were unveiled at RAF Odiham.
The Chinooks, bought in 1995 for £259m, could not be used because they did not meet airworthiness regulations.

Taken long enough, but they should never have been bought as they were........

Re: Helicopters - Chinooks ready after eight-year delay

Just seen the local news here, on that story, the reporter had a lift from Boscombe to Odiham (the base for chinooks) and was reporting the fact that the airframes were actually MKIV and the reason they had to be modified was because although MOD bought the choppers, they did not buy the access code to the software coding, so could not modify the software to meet british standards..... It has, and will, cost millions of pounds to remove the existing wiring, and re-wire  the wiring, and update the current software, to make the MK IV airframes, back to MK III versions, so they can be used by the army..... 9 years of dust gathering at Boscombe.......

All seems rather a pointless excercise really doesn't it.
After having them sat that long they should of got shot of them as surplus. Stick em on ebay or something - I'd bid a tenner  Wink
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Doesn't quite work like that.  Wink
It's sort of ironic that the opposition bang on so much about lack of helicopters yet it was them that ordered these stupidly expensive "bespoke" ones that could only be made to work after nearly 10 years and a ludicrous amount of money. Think how much decent kit that could have bought.

Clearly politicians can't escape some responsibility, but it's largely MoD civil servants - trying to maximise UK content of such kit. As I've said before they did the same with the Phantoms, the RAF fighter before the Tornado.
Just look at the Nimrod replacement for yet another example of MoD procurement mismanagement.

Don't forget TSR2, probably the best aircraft we never had. Fell at the whim of politicians and pleasing the Americans to buy the F111 at twice the price.
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

and the cancellation of CVA-01 and CVA-02  fleet carriers about the same time.
If we had them - the Falklands War would have been rather different - proper fleet protection and less ships sunk, much fewer casualties and a quicker resolution.
