Hear the word...

Most of the time I consider myself a reasonably good speller. Not to the point that I don't have a spell-checker set up though. But I find every now and then a word I want to use I can't get right. No matter how often I use them two such are nuisance and amateur. Since my mis-spellings usually fool the spell-checker as well I often have to resort to dictionary.
Anyone else have this sort of spell-blindness?

Re: Hear the word...

With respect the latter are not spelling errors, but used in the wrong context.
There: a place over there
Their: belonging to them
To: send to a place
Too: as well

Re: Hear the word...

Yes Petlew - I have noticed that as I get older I have a problem spelling certain words no matter how hard I try and I don't like it one bit.  I am unable to think of any examples at the moment.
The other thing is that my grammar is not as good as it was - use of apostrophes and that sort of thing.
English was my strong subject at school and I have always been pleased to be able to put words together reasonably well but sadly things are a little different these days.

Re: Hear the word...

apostrophes replace missing characters in a word
as in  t'morrow
t'day
frid'y
t'is thursday today etc
it's = itis
if you cant spell the word stick in  an apostr'e

Re: Hear the word...

Yes, sorry Gary the thread wasn't meant to be a dig at you or other dyslectics. One doesn't have to be so afflicted to have a problem with certain words. But I would have put a small side bet that you would make the comment you did Wink

Re: Hear the word...

It's not so much spelling as typing I have problems with.
For example "database" - I keep missing out the last 'a' - bit of a disadvantage in my previous job in IT.
"Pension" is another one - I keep getting the 'i' and the 's' the wrong way round - a big disadvantage in my current job.
The name "Louise" always comes out as "Lousie", "Williams" as "Willimas", and any time the combination "tch" appears in the middle of a word it becomes "cth".
So if your name is "Louise Pritchard Williams" and you get a letter addressed to "Lousie Pricthard Willimas" advising you about your "penison", it's come from me!
