Haunting Memories from Childhood

For some of the regular readers you’ll recall the thread where I was bleating about a parcel that went missing but turned up later and when I posted the update to say the parcel had arrived I said that there was a DVD box set in it…

Well when I was a kid about 8 / 9 I remembered watching the reruns of this show on the TV thinking it was the best. Even then I knew it wasn’t (couldn’t be) real but to a young imagination that didn’t matter. So last night I took the cellophane off the box and watched the first two episodes.

Even after the years that have passed I wasn’t disappointed, but I do know in this day and age SFX are everything, and can make or break a TV show or Film and watching last night it was evident that this was made on a very small budget but for me it was just as good last night as it was to me when I was a child.

What is the box set I’m talking about, it's Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), yeah I know, but I don’t care.

Re: Haunting Memories from Childhood

I recently enjoyed watching the various Pathfinders series.

The shape of the spaceship used to return to Earth from the Moon had stuck in my head since childhood.

Glad to see I'm not alone in liking this. As mentioned above there are some things that just stick in your head, and for me this was one.

I will say one thing, while watching this and that was the number of cars on the roads. Or in this instance the serious lack of them when this was made. In some scenes the roads look near deserted and I doubt their budget would stretch to road closures.

The DVDs came with a little booklet and from reading it the series was originally released in 1969, so I guess it was made either that year or the year before, but what a huge difference in the amount of traffic in those near 50 years.

Re: Haunting Memories from Childhood

A lot of old films and series, some in B&W beat a lot of modern stuff.

With all the technology and special effects that should not be possible but bad acting, mumbled lines and poor plots are quite common these days.

As for driving, 50 years ago it was a pleasure, these days it's a pain.

A great series, along with Van Der Valk, I remember watching in the 70's.

Still remember the theme tune after all these years, did see an episode a year or so back, still gripping and I can't believe it used to be on the in the afternoon. I remember watching Pebble Mill at One then Van Der Valk. (showing my age now!)

Another I remember was Blakes Seven, however I did get the "video" (remember them? like large cassette's) from the library back in 90/91. And just couldn't watch it is was so aged!

Shame they don't do a Star Trek and remaster them with improved graphics.

If you watch the dvd's they had a good if brief new intro.
