Government to Double Soldiers Operational Allowance

On his visit to Afghanistan David Cameron announced that the operational allowance to frontline troops will be doubled and backdated to 6th. May. A welcome and long overdue move.
Additional Allowance for Soldiers
DC also announced an additional £67m to countering insurgents' bombs, in addition to £150m already committed.
Whilst we would like to see our soldiers home it is nevertheless encouraging to see additional support for them whilst they are there.

Agreed..........................
How are we going to pay for this?  I thought they were going to cut spending......
Oh... Hang on a minute.... saw this in our local paper tonight.... a "possible increase in vat to 20 % " is in the "guesses" for the new budget... Hmm.....
(I vaguely remember the conservatives and 25% Purchase Tax.... (VAT under it`s old name)...  )
