Government backtracving on Post office and ID Cards

Two policy reversals in as many days:
First compulsory ID cards and now Royal Mail sell off .

Nobody wants to buy a share in the Royal Mail presumably cos they would have to take on the pension fund which is billions in the red.

The next climbdown should be Brown and his entire government.

You mean just like in 1996/97 when John Major resigned - or not ?
They went on to one  of the worst electoral defeats in British politics since the Great Reform Act of 1832.
Oh what short memories

I mean he should call an election.  He is going from one crisis to another and doesn't have the backing of his party or the public.  Devoid of ideas.

But PM's just don't do that do they - which PM in history has unless forced to ??.
John Major certainly didn't, Thatcher didn't after Black Wednesday

You seem to have a fixation with John Major Wink  They certainly didn't get the country in the mess we are in now.

and you have a fixation with saying it is this government.
The whole world is in a mess, and a lot of places are worse than us, I perhaps you should set up an outpost on the moon

Re: Government backtracving on Post office and ID Cards

The government have been in power for 12 years - and as such get a lot of people knocking them - after all with our first past the post system - only about 30 to 40% of people voted for them.
Same with last Tory governments - after a long time in power they became stale
too.

I agree with you there Mal.  12 years is too long for any government to be in power.
Not going to agree with you on PR though.

Harold Wilson called an election in 1966 without being forced and only 18 months after the last election.
Edit:This is an example why I don't believe in fixed term governments. If we had them then Wilson would not been able to go back to the people to get a working majority.

Re: Government backtracving on Post office and ID Cards

There is some merit in a fixed term for a government - like the US President, and Blair & Thatcher were PM too long - so may be a rule that after X years - the party leader/PM  has to change if they are in government. I'd suggest something like half way through their second term - so about 6 to 7 years.
