Re: Gordon is resigning!

What chance of him hanging on until September?

Good riddance - he shouldn't wait until September.  Tomorrow would be too long Angry

Re: Gordon is resigning!

Agree with artmo.
But who will follow, don't fancy the Milly-Boys (one is too left of centre left, the other too right), not keen on Harriot Harman, defiantly not Mendleson, Darling or Balls.
Of the current cabinet I'd choose either Jack Straw or Hilary Benn.
Any other suggestions?

Re: Gordon is resigning!

email from a friend (very bias), not my words!
So much for all this rubbish about doing his "duty" by the British people
If it was his duty to stay on, why is he now stepping down?
He should do now is go to the Queen, resign as PM and advise her to invite the winner of the election, David Cameron, to form the next government.
What we have instead is an astonishingly corrupt attempt by the Labour party to mount a coup to put another Prime Minister in place.

Re: Gordon is resigning!

That does raise a point.
GB was not elected as prime minister.
His successor as leader of the labour party has not been elected as prime minister.  Yet he could become it due to GB's decision to not resign his role.
Something is seriously wrong with UK politics.
Similarly, what is the point of the Buckingham seat at present - the speaker is supposed to be impartial.  Therefore he/she should not be an MP as at present, he does not provide a voice for his constituency in the commons.

Re: Gordon is resigning!

As has been said endlessly, WE DO NOT HAVE A PRESIDENTIAL SYSTEM!  Angry
We have a parliamentary democracy with a  "first past the post" voting system.
The PM is chosen by the ruling group in parliament.

Re: Gordon is resigning!

Indeed, but how many people voted based on the personality of the leader of the party?
It might not be the way it is supposed to work, but that is what happens.

How about Hattie Harperson  - she'd lose any party the next election Wink
