Gordon Bennett

Has anyone else been following the gas balloon race on http://www.gordonbennett2010.com/
Amazing how far the Swiss entry went before landing.

Re: Gordon Bennett

If you look at the competition area they had to stop when they did or be disqualified.
Edit: Looking at the map, it's going to take some very accurate navigation to beat them as the area available is very small.

Re: Gordon Bennett

I watched something about it on TV at the weekend and the competition area was governed by permissions to use air space.
Seems that if they'd been blown in an easterly direction that they had permission to go through Heathrow airspace.
When one realises that they are just in a basket and the only controls are to drop sand to climb and let gas out to decend it's quite some feat.

Re: Gordon Bennett

This mornings news about USA2 is a little worrying.

Re: Gordon Bennett

looking at it last night the Brit and German Ballons were at 9000 Plus but the USA one was at less than 6000, and its track is going round in circles, Bad weather and lost communication search parties out
the British Balloon also had a rapid change of direction before it landed
