Gmail Accounts potentially exposed

Just read an article claiming that Gmail accounts may have recently been exposed: https://www.yahoo.com/tech/russian-hackers-release-5-million-gmail-usernames-and-97147084299.html
My personal account was affected so I've had to change my password! I'd strongly suggest that anyone that uses Gmail does the same. You can check if you've been affected here: https://isleaked.com/en

You've been using the same password for 3 years? Tut Wink  Roll eyes
Don't forget to add 2 factor authentication

Re: Gmail Accounts potentially exposed

My password certainly wasn't 3 years old, it gets changed every 90 days or so.

Re: Gmail Accounts potentially exposed

Interesting, most others I know say theirs were very old passwords.
Assume it's a specific Gmail one as it doesn't appear to be a breach at Google itself?

Re: Gmail Accounts potentially exposed

From what I've read the passwords appear to have been taken from other sources, possibly phishing in some cases, but it;s worth changing it in my opinion.
My password, from the top of my head, is the same that I use on a few other services, but I do like to switch them around for each different service I use.
Maybe I'm just having a spat of bad luck Tongue

Thanks for that! Just checked mine (barely used so no loss really) and it says I'm safe.
Thats good news for me as I really can't be bothered changing my password...
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: Gmail Accounts potentially exposed

Maybe i'm just paranoid, but I wouldn't go entering your email addy into some random Russian website too check.
The text file was widely available all over the net when the story originally broke (haven't checked since) but I would download that and manually check if your on the list.

Re: Gmail Accounts potentially exposed

There are various checkers, I don't think they are any harm, it's just querying your input against the table within the database they've created which has the e-mail address stored within that was taken from the website.

Gotta be honest I'm really not to worried about it to be honest. The only thing it would really affect is my ability to post on youtube... *yawn*

The site allows you to wildcard upto 3 characters so you don't have to give them the complete email address.

Re: Gmail Accounts potentially exposed

If you suspect  your email service  Id/password has been hacked it is a sensible thing to run a check on your own PC for Trojan malware.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Re: Gmail Accounts potentially exposed

@AlaricAdair
Whilst I tend to agree to some degree, it is also most likely not the case in this instance (according to the article)
The other sensible advice is not to open Email's that you are / have not expected & or look to good to be true, & do not click on any links until verified they are genuine
& do not freely advertise / distribute you email address on social networking sites etc (different if it is a business email of course)
[quote= https://www.yahoo.com/tech/russian-hackers-release-5-million-gmail-usernames-and-97147084299.html]The good news is that even if your Gmail address is on the list, the password may be too old to merit much concern.
The Russian tech blog Habrahabr theorizes that the leaked Gmail addresses and passwords were most likely compiled through phishing scams, use of weak passwords and other common compromises, not as a result of a hacked Google server.
And upon even the slightest suspicion that you email or any account has been compromised, (CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD) straight away
