The last of the Gasometers are being dismantled across the country.
[quote=http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-30405066]Gas holders helped warm the UK's homes for decades. But now they are being removed, with the National Grid saying land is being "redeveloped and given back to communities". Will these sentinels of the industrial age be missed?
As a child I found them fascinating albeit a little eerie. There were three that I passed on the way to and from school every day till I went to grammar school in a different area.
Iconic or just eye-sores they were imposing constructions.

I remember them with affection.
They were my first introduction to science, when my grandfather explained why they went up and down at various times of the day.
Then I became fascinated by telephone kiosks, and the rest is history...
Papyrus and Comic Sans walk into a bar. The bartender says, "Get out -- we don't serve your type."

I was trying to find a recording of John Arlott that ran something like "Trueman coming in from the gasworks end" in the August 1953 test.
This was the best I could find

not sure who the umpire was

I used to enjoy watching the endless conveyor belts covered in smoking coke that originally ran alongside the ones near me.
