Gambling

I am against gambling in most forms but understand the weekly Lottery kind of flutter that many people indulge in.

What really annoys me is the addictive gambler who loses hundreds of pounds a year.

However it's not the person placing the bet or dropping the coins in the machine that annoy me but the parasitic companies that deal in this form of addiction.

In my opinion these companies are little better than cocaine and heroin dealers as they prey on the weak.

Re: Gambling

I see your point, However... I think the problem is more to do with addictive personality.

Re: Gambling

Never been much of a gambler myself. Thought I would share this clip, play it to the end as there is a giveaway she gives to her audience and then watch her crowd go wild. Made my stomach churn a bit.

Re: Gambling

The worst place for Gambling is the Internet Angry there are thousands of site who advertise all over the net and TV .

The first thing that needs addressing is the reducing of adverts , or banning them

Asus ROG Hero Vii Z97 , Intel i5 4690k ,ROG Asus Strix 1070,

Re: Gambling

In theory,.... the weekly lottery, was intended to be "a bit of fun"....BUT.. due to the nature of people, always using the same numbers ( presumably to reduce the odds slightly).. that causes the addiction... as .... if you don`t "play"... then you may have lost out on your numbers coming up, that day/week.

and so the "national LOOTery, is the biggest legal con to shaft the poor,  the government has  allowed to happen....

To quote @Strat

In my opinion these companies are little better than cocaine and heroin dealers as they prey on the weak.

I used to do the National Lottery... but stopped ... then started to do the Health Lottery... but similar "bad luck" with that... and now I don`t do any  !...

I am not a "well off" person... so I figure, that... I would not give my best friend £4 per week and get nothing in return.... so why should I give it away to some commercial company such as Camelot.

Re: Gambling

The lottery is a way to tax people who don't smoke or drink.  The UK had little choice but to start a lottery or one of the other EU countries would have started 'trading' in the UK.  E.g. it was reported at the time that the Italian lottery had its eye on the UK market.  Interestingly, despite the single market, we are not allowed to win the UK lottery if we buy our ticket from abroad, for example on line while on holiday in Spain.

Try doing your own fantasy lottery, i.e. write down the required selection of numbers without actually buying the ticket, then put the money the ticket would have cost in a jar.  After a year, see how much you have in the jar compared to how much you would have won.  Chances are you are a lot better off not playing.  Of course you'll never know whether you might have won the stupid raffle that now goes with the Lotto and Euromillions.

Re: Gambling

It's like anything in life - fine in moderation but you have to be very strict with yourself in when to stop.
That is the difficult part, if you win you think "Oh brilliant I could win more".
If you lose money you get upset and think "Oh but on the next gamble I could get it all back".

I haven't bought a lottery ticket in years, I have been to a Casino, when I went to Sydney.

My friend said, "Do you want to go to the casino?", I said "Ok, are you going to go on anything?", "No I don't like gambling", and I said "Well why did you suggest going to a casino then?" Crazy2

I put $1 in a fruit machine, won $5 and we left, and I joked that is a good return on investment.

Been to the horses for someone's stag doo which I hated. Would never go there again, I better not go into detail as to why, but two words which sum it up is animal cruelty.

Also when it existed went to Walthamstow dogs on a work doo, being a work function food and drink was on them. Obviously bets aren't, I spent £30 on bets, won about £20 back.

Still even back then (10 years ago-ish), you can't grumble at a £10 night out with food and drink included.

Re: Gambling

I once went into a bookies but only because my friend's mother told me to tell him his dinner was ready and he was in the bookies.

I once went into a casino because that same friend went for a job on security there and I went with him out of curiosity.

Re: Gambling

Gambling is a mugs game, the odds must be against you otherwise the companies that run them would be out of business.

Several times I have watched people playing roulette but they watch the wrong part of the board, namely the wheel, what they should be watching is how much the house wins most of the time, even those who win simply gamble again and lose it.

Perhaps Las Vegas is the perfect example, consider where all the money has come from to build those hotels, just to run them must cost a fortune.

Re: Gambling

Me and a friend joked, that while you can't drink alcohol at a bookies, they seem to have a large premises. So their rent must be high and they are doing well.

Don't know about where you live, but there always seems to be a pub opposite one and I've seen people put bets on and pop to the pub opposite. After all, it doesn't matter now if the pub isn't showing it - in this day and age you can watch it on your phone now.

In Australia when I went they actually have a proper bookie section in the pub.

Not that I mind, just find it funny. Smiley

Re: Gambling

@Alex

Makes sense for bookies to be near a pub, gambling aside how many of us have made a daft decision, done something silly or said the wrong thing that we would not have done had we been sober ?

Re: Gambling

I used to do a line on the Lottery when it was just once a week, then they started adding more draws & draws during the week & I stopped, its just an excuse to fleece people.

I normally have a little gamble / bet on something during the year ( restrict myself to £50 for the year )

I had a combination of free bets & my £50 allowance last year for several of the women's track cycling races at the Olympics & they all came in, winnings paid for some new tools I was after.

Re: Gambling

On a serious note I have never gambled more than a few pounds on the Grand National most years. I gave up the Lottery a couple of years ago and haven't missed it. I started buying more Premium Bonds with every £50 I saved. I haven't won since doing so but at least I get my stake back if/when I want it.
