GMail

There seems to be a few threads around regarding email so I am continuing the theme.
On the forum we get a lot of membership applications from spammers. They are all
easily weeded out with a quick visit to StopForumSpam.  However, I am finding that increasingly
there is no need to take this route as so many of them are quite obviously spammers.  They all
have gmail addresses and they are totally ridiculous - strings of letters making no sense at all.
You only need to look at the SFS pages to see that a large majority come from this source.
It has made me very derisive of Gmail and I almost don't take any of these addresses
seriously now (except for my friend's which I set up for her - and my own of course).
I would say that it is the major source of potential spam to my own forum and possibly others.
I think that it is about time that a huge company like Google got their act together and sorted
it out.  Angry

Re: GMail

I quite like Gmail, I have a personal account and we use a Google Apps domain for work email, calender etc. Both work very well and sync with my Blackberry phone nicely.
I think spammers will take up free email addresses wherever they are available, I get a lot of spam from China using Hotmail.

Re: GMail

Fortunately they don't end up on the forum as I just delete them immediately.
It just puzzles me why they are all Gmail and not the other free email addresses e.g. Yahoo, Hotmail.

Probably because gmail spam measures are tough so making people believe that the email has gone through the gmail servers might make them believ they are not spam.

Re: GMail

On the forums I run we've banned *@gmail.com - we were getting about 20 spammer signups a day with gmail addresses

jelv -How did you ban @gmail.com users please?  It may be useful to know that for poppy and I?

Re: GMail

phpBB forums have a ban control page where you can ban user names, IP addresses (single or ranges) or email addresses.

Re: GMail

Yes, I have found the area where IP and email addies can be banned.  I am reluctant to ban gmail addresses because probably most folk who use them are not would-be spammers.
TBH I had not considered that these people might be signing up simply because gmail gets through spam detection systems in the first place.
It is way beyond me but I would have thought that Google would have some system to detect at least some of the  bogus sign-ups.
I mean - who can possible want or need an (unpronounceable)  email address with approximately 15 or more totally random letters@gmail.
It isn't a vast problem at the moment because the forum is only open to members and we can quickly weed them out.
Also, it is not hugely busy so does not take out much time to do.  Just annoying and makes me think less of gmail addies.

That's pretty brutal and unfair to the huge majority of totally legitimate Googlemail users. Shocked

Re: GMail

I have a life and dealing with up to four or five spammer registrations an hour is not how I wish to spend it!
We sometimes get emails from gmail users saying they couldn't register - if so we open it up for just as long as it takes for them to register and then shut it down again. In that time we always get a number of spammer registrations.

Re: GMail

Hopefully they'll move on sooner rather than later.  Sad
I'm intrigued because I'm involved in a fair few forums and it's just not a problem (ref gmail) anyone else has mentioned.
Do you have any "real human" traps such as captcha etc. to try to reduce automated registration?

My gmail address is a six-digit number. (Less likely to get spam myself!)
As an aside - if people are registering with @gmail.com you could tell them to enter their address as @googlemail.com
