Frightening stuff

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/world_now/2011/10/greece-protests-violence.html
Quote
Violence gripped Greece’s capital anew Thursday as swarms of extremists armed with stones and gasoline bombs clashed with peaceful protesters, leaving a 53-year-old worker dead.

We are living through the death throes of an ideal, a dream which has turned into a nightmare – it is the end of the social democratic welfare model.
I am referring to the whole panoply of benefits (entitlements, as they are called in America), labour market regulations (employment protection, minimum wage legislation, limits on the length of the working week etc. etc.) and other social democratic devices intended to inflate like airbags to protect us all from shocks from any possible direction. The whole edifice built up in Western countries to shelter us from the need to earn a living is now clearly unsustainable. We can no longer afford a regime which allowed, indeed encouraged us to live permanently beyond our means both as individuals and as a society.

Looks like BOE's Quantitive Easing into a Zimbabwe solution is the way we're going, anyone any better ideas?

Re: Frightening stuff

The Greeks of course always like a good riot (as long as it doesn't extend into siesta time of course).
You can bet there'll be people just a few yards away sipping coffee and beer.....

Re: Frightening stuff

Seems a number of rich Greeks are buying property in London which can only add to the problems in Greece as they are withdrawing large sums of money out of the country.
Doesn't help London much either as property prices will be forced further up in some areas.

Re: Frightening stuff

Just Googled the origins of Greek plate smashing, and found -
Quote
Breaking plates is an act which implies abundance - "We have so many plates we can break them!" - similar to lighting a fire with a piece of paper money.

So maybe they need to stop doing that now  Crazy

Greek plate smashing

It's usually done with cheap or worthless unglazed or reject plates.

Re: Frightening stuff

I expect the Greeks say the same about us.
I don't think they watch our riots on their TV's and say "The British riots are so much more civilised than ours".

Re: Frightening stuff

The situation in Greece will get worse before it gets better.  The whole country needs a reality check.
