Re: French visitor to the UK, Passport required?

Just had a read up again and passports are necessary to enter the UK.  As I said in post #5.  It's all controlled by the Schengen Agreement, and this would also answer Pierre's point on travelling to Sligo with photo ID.

Re: French visitor to the UK, Passport required?

Thanks for the info and advice. It seemed clear to me a passport would be required for him to come to the UK.
My daughter now tells me she has called the French embassy and was told a photo ID would be OK Huh

They only need their National Identity Card.
From the Home Office UK Border Agency site here:

What travel documents are accepted at the border?
You must be the legal holder of a genuine document. Your documents must be valid and issued by a government or authority. The most common examples of travel documents are:
national passports; or
1951 Convention travel documents for refugees.
We also accept national identity cards for EEA citizens.

My wife contacted the British Consulate in Marseilles asking the question and got this reply

Absolutely no problem travelling to the UK on a valid French ID card

I have to say I am surprised at that

Re: French visitor to the UK, Passport required?

So does that mean I can get into France at Charles de Gaulle airport with my photo ID [driving licence]. I think I will try that next time

Re: French visitor to the UK, Passport required?

Another example of why the UK is so behind the times compared with our continental colleagues.
I travelled all over Europe with colleagues from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, France, Gemany, Spain  etc., and they had their credit card sized ID card - yet I had to carry UK passport......................
why are the Brit's so insular and maybe a bit arrogant ?.
