French visitor to the UK, Passport required?

Do French nationals require a passport to travel to the UK for a holiday?

Yes they do,
They will be asked for their passport at the UK Frontier Control points in France.
I know this as I travel between the UK and France on a regular basis.  Smiley

Re: French visitor to the UK, Passport required?

I see the question has been answered by CB but will tell you something interesting.
When I went to Ireland way back in 2001 the Ryanair site said you just needed ID but did not specify so I rang and asked and they just said pretty much anything with your name and photograph.
For safety's sake I applied for a passport and its a good job I did as was asked specifically for one at the airport!

Forgot about that Jim,
Yes, they can use their identity card for travel in the EU

Re: French visitor to the UK, Passport required?

The French and all Europeans do need a passport to enter the UK.  They don't need a passport to enter other countries in the EU.  This is because they have signed the Schengen Agreement which we have not.  The Schengen Agreement allows travel between signatories across each others borders as if the border doesn't exist.  ID is still required.

Re: French visitor to the UK, Passport required?

I had always thought that a passport was required for entry into the UK [they always want to see mine].
My daughters French boyfriend is planning to visit and is insisting that he can travel any where in Europe [including the UK] on his ID card, I thought otherwise.

Re: French visitor to the UK, Passport required?

I was watching one of those Airline programmes, this one follows EasyJet.
It was probably made some time ago, but they showed someone being refused travel because their regulations state you must have a passport, wherever you go.
That was their regulations then, so it's probably best to check with who they're travelling with.
It's may not be a legal requirement, but it could be within the T&C's of a ticket.

Technically you don't need a passport at all, but you would have a heck of a battle to get your identity accepted at certain frontiers.
And there is a specific agreement between UK and Ireland so nothing is needed either way, but of course that makes flying difficult.
I've certainly been to Ireland in the past without showing any id at all.

Might just be safer advising him to get a passport as at least all bases are covered as you never know who might be manning security.

Re: French visitor to the UK, Passport required?

A bit of Googling threw up this http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/ecg/ecbasics/traveldocuments#5754452
which states
Quote
ECB8.11 Identity cards of EEA and Swiss nationals
EEA and Swiss nationals may use identity cards as travel documents for travel to the United Kingdom.
European Economic Area (EEA) countries
Note that EEA stands for European Economic Area and basically includes the previous members of EFTA and the present members of the EU http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Economic_Area

Re: French visitor to the UK, Passport required?

I'm one of those who would be in difficulty if I tried to take a flight within the UK (e.g. London to Glasgow) due to the tightened security regulations - basically I can't without forking out extra money. Sad

My brother and his wife managed that not so many years ago - were on the ferry from Dover when they realised they had left their passports behind.
