Freeview Gambling & Dating Channels

I'm interested to hear your views on the various Freeview Gambling & Dating channels that fill our guide lists. Do we really need them?

I for one think it's irresponsible to make gambling so easily available, gambling wrecks many lives so why have it on our TV's?

Dating channels are no better, the lure of scantily clad men or women has only one outcome.., to run up your phone bills and put you in debt not to mention this poses a risk for children!

Not that I've ever used either! Angel

Thoughts?

Nobody forces anyone to watch or partake in these channels. We're all adults with a free will and buttons to switch channels or turn off the TVWink

Indeed.

Plus they've secured the licences, spectrum, EPG slots etc etc to broadcast, so have as much right to do so as  anyone else imo.

@Mav

@DaveyH

LOL.., at least we know which channels you watch then Grin

Seriously though why have these channels and in articular gambling available on TV, aren't you forgetting children in your comments? It's know different to being online, when you get asked to prove your age nobody comes to visit you to verify this. It's all taken on trust which is why so many kids can access porn.

I don't believe they should be allowed, but ultimately, they'd still be a problem for people anyway as has been for centuries with uncontrollable gambling and paying to look at and interfere with naked ladies...

Never had an interest or desire to watch either and you can add to that those shopping channels - not that folks would come to much harm watching one! It is important that we watch out for the damage they can cause but, at the end of the day we can as suggested just switch off.

Re: Freeview Gambling & Dating Channels

Why pick on tv channels ? Most people who view this stuff use the internet.

I suspect the internet is even worse as stuff you can get on there would simply not be available on the tv channels, in addition to which it is free......or so I am told.

Strange isn't it that many people have no objections to gambling and porn but take a different view if it was their son or daughter who was involved.

Because television is now the internet? Ours is anyway when it comes to viewing advertised programs. From TV screen to computer, from computer to TV, it's getting harder to tell the difference - apart from the size of the damned things!

 No!

 I call it responsible parenting, and not something that should be left up to a nanny state...

No not referring to nanny states, perish the thought. I was more concerned about what children do when their parents cannot watch over them. I'm really talking children who might be at an age where curiosity gets the better of them and are at a sufficient age to be left alone for the odd hour or so. I don't have any children myself but I know plenty of parents who routinely go out for an afternoon shopping and leave their 13-14 year old children unsupervised.

You say "irresponsible parenting" but is it really? No parent can watch over their child 24/7. Look at how life has changed for children nowadays.., they have mobile phones, tablets, iPads and so on, all with online access, TV is no different. Lots of people now have TV's with web browsers and so the problem only grows.

If I knew the solution I'd happily share it but I don't, hence why I asked the question.

Re: Freeview Gambling & Dating Channels

Short answer to the O.P...

There are many "gambling dens" on our high streets... and (some) back streets too....

There are many "massage parlours " ( aka brothels) available if you know where to look....

just because they are "out there" and available does not mean you have to use them...

Personally... having a choice... I have visited neither type of establishment.... Angel

@shutter

Clearly you are missing my point although I admit I should have been clearer from the outset. Children can't visit these places on the high street but they can on the TV.

Re: Freeview Gambling & Dating Channels

@MKSlinky  as my post said,.. referring to your original post... which does not include the word "children", or any implications thereto !..

as for the word " children "... please define the age of " children "... as I understand it, it is anyone under the age of 18...

which, kinda, leaves the question of Parental responsibility ( again not mentioned in your original post ). wide open to abuse...

Re: Freeview Gambling & Dating Channels

And how would children open an account with these channels? They would have to lodge funds with the channel before any gambling can take place. I have an account with Betfair but if I haven't got funds I can't place a bet.

@shutter

Does so! Nah nah na nah nah!! Tongue

Okay so I might have missed that bit out about parental responsibilities but I wasn't expecting much of a response here. Clearly the forums jungle drums are busy tonight if my pop-ups are anything to go by.

Going shopping now without my children (I don't have any). Catch you all later
