Not scrapped for all over 75s but seems a fair conclusion.

Re: Free television licence for over 75s scrapped.

Bit confused by the following :

“The BBC will scrap blanket free licences for over-75s, but those households with one person who receives pension credit will still be eligible.”

Does that refer to  a household where one of the occupants is over 75, or does it mean a household where the only occupant is over 75 ?

Re: Free television licence for over 75s scrapped.

Why not carry on to its inevitable conclusion and scrap the licence and the BBC as well.

I can't remember how many years it's been since I last watched a BBC channel.

Either way it's one less thing for the young to look forward to in their older years.

I've always thought the free licence was a good thing as it was a plus point for those thinking of having an aged parent living with them.

It seems you got the figures slightly wrong way round....

...  from the BBC report

The BBC's consultation was announced in November last year.

Nearly half of respondents (48%) said they were in favour of continuing concessions to over-75s.

Thirty-seven percent were in favour of reforming the current rules

with 15% in favour of scrapping concessions of over-75s.

@Champnet

The way it reads to me, is....  If there is one person who is 75 or over, in the household  ,AND in receipt of Pension Credit,      then they will be allowed the FREE tv licence...

@shutter  sorry if it was not clear... the against was for keeping ...the 52 for scrapping or changing. so we do actually agree:grin:

Not surprised about this and at least those on pension credit will not have to pay so that's a good thing - well it will be for me anyway in three years time.

But hey, it could be worse, at least they are not scrapping the over 75s.

Re: Free television licence for over 75s scrapped.

After the change I wonder how long it will be before we see over 75s in court for not paying the tv licence because they have not appreciated what the letter they received meant or even not received it.

Also how much is it going to cost the BBC to check that the people who claim to have Pension Credit actually do receive it?

Re: Free television licence for over 75s scrapped.

The money they pay many of their presenters is simply outrageous, but let's not over-blame the BBC as this was a government policy dumped on them which they in turn dumped on the over 75s.

Great comment on the BBC site, "The over 75s should march on Parliament and ask to use the toilet" :2funny:

Re: Free television licence for over 75s scrapped.

The news page still use the age old pirate record assumptions with the bill and the cost etc etc.

What cost what bill all I see are people exempt from paying. There is no loss or cost. And the figures quoted are if all those getting the current free licence will go on to pay. Like that will happen.

It never did with record piracy but it does make some fanciful make believe loss projections.

As for the bit about the usual young supporting the old claptrap don't me laugh. I would imagine the "young" would be all for supporting a future benefit in this case. So I really don't believe many of the "young" objected to this.

Just to add to the above. As you can no longer edit due to the silly limits here.

I just wish I was surprised with the BBC presenting fiction as facts.

But sadly the "Why you can trust BBC News" at the bottom of every page just results in a wry smile.

Re: Free television licence for over 75s scrapped.

Still trying to understand how it works. Looks to me as if a young family, one or both earning, looking after Grandma, 75 & broke, could claim a free TV licence. Does that look fair ?
