Free Full-Fibre Broadband by 2030

So sayeth shadow chancellor John McDonnell.

What does he mean by 'full-fibre'?  At a meeting about high-tech under the last Labour government the (female) government minister in charge of such things didn't know the difference between dial-up and BB.

He's living in cloud-cuckoo land (IMO). Point one - nothing is 'free', it all has a cost which someone has to bear and point two as alluded to by @Jonpe , does he even know what he is talking about? I doubt it.

Re: Free Full-Fibre Broadband by 2030

Here we go again with Labour promising to spend loads of taxpayers money on 'freebies for all to buy votes'... The Labour policies like increasing immigration is driving away many of their traditional voters - looking at latest polls they are 20 points behind conservatives amongst 'working class' voters and 14 points behind amongst middle class voters. I hope comrade Corbyn will realise that his merry band of momentum supporters who have taken Labour back to the Michael Foot era and  have come up with a toxic mix of policies, and if he keeps listening to their echo chamber he will be facing a whitewash in December..

The things that will increase under Labour are illegal immigration, low skill immigration, the national debt and unemployment.  Remember it was Tony Blair who put the NHS and school system under financial strain with his embracing of PFI to build schools and hospitals but give 'loadsa money' to private investors and massive debt to taxpayer - now I know PFI was a John major idea, but they really took off under 'new Labour' who were far to the right of Maggie Thatcher..

You would have to be fairly dumb to believe what they are promising.

They cannot even agree amongst themselves !

Re: Free Full-Fibre Broadband by 2030

The irony is that they claim will pay for it by taxing the corporations … well BT will have no income to be taxed … and what impact will that have on their pensioners?  They claim they will tax Google & Facebook … who will of course pass the cost on to users.  So in the end, we still pay for it.

Barking mad is an understatement.

Don't see why, @TTman  - it is merely more knee-jerk, ill-thought out 'policy' from politicians who think (hope?) we're all thick enough to fall for it.

Well the problem is that younger more impressionable voters who have not seen Labour in action before may well believe it,  There is a good case for actually raising the voting age, not lowering it.  Lowering the voting age benefits parties like the SNP Labour and LibDums which is why they keep pushing for it ( and in the SNP case got it in Scotland ) as they hoover up the 'gullible' vote. ....

That's market gullibility for you, plus the fact that many trading companies have buy/sell decisions driven by computer programs which are set to respond to this type of statement without a human brain being used - hence the constant volatile nature of the market.

Full fibre for everyone for free by 2030?? Bit short notice for Openreach!! They need at least another 147 years to get that far at their current rate of workmanship!!! 🤣

Boris has responded, saying he intends to re-open lots of closed railway lines, ( I think he is targeting the north for votes) .

Re: Free Full-Fibre Broadband by 2030

He'd be lucky to get the Stanhope & Tyne railway re-opened (the one that ran through where I live), even in part, cos it's been built over in so many places it'd require kicking loads of people out of their (albeit cheapo shoebox) homes for bulldozing... 🤣

But there's already a lot of lines being re-opened, and it's been through councils making the decisions, not the PM, he really is a dork... 😂

More hot air - how many times have heard similar stories - especially during election campaigns - that come to nothing.
