Fray Bentos pies

After 50 years of making Fray Bentos pies the company are now redesigning the tin as it is claimed some young people can no longer open them.

Re: Fray Bentos pies

Morrisons Chunky Steak Pies....are much better.... and cheaper ! ..

Problem is, they are hard to come by in our Morrisons, because they are so popular !

and, you don`t need a tin opener !

Re: Fray Bentos pies

I actually bought myself a Fray Bentos Steak & Ale pie this week for the first time in years, and, erm, yeah, I had a hard time opening the tin, cos the tin openers in this house all seem to be completely incapable of cutting tinfoil, never mind tins!! Crazy2

Oh, and the pie, it was awful, they've changed the recipe so much that it's nothing like what I remember from the 90s, and so little meat that it was a joke, so, I won't be getting another any time soon... Funny

Re: Fray Bentos pies

its about time tins were made safer to open, like corned beef tins you can slice ya fingers if the key snaps.

Re: Fray Bentos pies

I used fo eat a lot of Fray Bentos pies in the 90's. Had one a few years ago and wasn't that impressed with the filling although the pastry was still as good.

Re: Fray Bentos pies

Opening the tin not a problem for me as I have not bought one of those since I bit into a huge bit of gristle back in the 70s. Same with a sausage once, but I eventually got over that experience.

[-Censored-] in skin, [-Censored-] in a tin. Same difference.

Re: Fray Bentos pies

As it happens I had a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie for tea yesterday - great flaky pastry, maybe not that much meat in there but very tasty. Don't think the tin is trickier to open than any other, you just need a decent quality tin-opener.

As for other tins - the dreaded ring-pull on cans of sardines in sunflower oil which I can get half way open, but by then the fingers on my left hand are covered in slippery oil and the whole operation suddenly becomes life-threatening (and sardines are supposed to be good for you! Shocked)

Re: Fray Bentos pies

I've never had one - are they any good?
Now I am feeling hungry reading this thread I am considering trying one Smiley

Reminds me of the old can ring pull days, the ones you had to chuck. I remember as a much younger me trying to deal with them.

Re: Fray Bentos pies

Strangely I actually saw something on TV about this, not a lot of it, but enough to see the tin and the tin openers which wouldn't open it, the cheapest ones were the ones for the job, with the ££'s ones not cutting the tin ;-)

However I have NEVER EVER had or expect to eat a steak pie in a tin! Go to your local butcher much better and using real limps of steak not nearly mince.
