Although I remember the snow - it was about 4 ft deep in our drive - I wasn't aware of the catastrophic floods

I think I'd be starting grammar school about then. Like you I don't recall floods, but the snow. I had a mile walk to the bus stop, down an up a hill, with bridge wide ice sheet half way. The main road was so icy, that the bus could only crawl but not stop, so just as people then would jump off the rear platform, we jumped on.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_of_1946%E2%80%9347_in_the_United_Kingdom
Mid-March brought warmer air to the country which thawed the snow lying on the ground. This snowmelt ran off the frozen ground straight into rivers and caused widespread flooding. More than 100,000 properties were affected and the British Army and foreign aid agencies were forced to provide humanitarian aid.
I don't remember the 46/47 winter as I wasn't born until autumn 1947 but my parents and sister mentioned it every winter since when it snowed.

Last September I mentioned 9/11 to one of the managers at work, and he said, "Yes, I remember it, the TV was on in the 6th form common room". Made me feel really old.
