First vehicle you drove with a manual transmission?

Not a car for me, but a James 125 motorcycle not unlike this one!

First motorised journey as well on my own was from our home West Croydon all the way to Westminster bridge on the A23.

Re: First vehicle you drove with a manual transmission?

First for me was a 1959 Austin Seven - as they were originally marketed - with crash gearbox and not a lot in the way of comfort. That would have been around March 1972 when I got my provisional licence, followed a couple of months later by an 'enhanced' 1964 Mini Cooper 'S' - and I know which was easiest, but not as exciting, to drive.

Sadly, I got whacked by plonker of a driver going for my lunch one day, smashed my elbow, and by the time that had healed properly, my 12 months was up, so I never (legally) drove again.

Re: First vehicle you drove with a manual transmission?

My lovely old two door Morris 1000.

I even modernised it. With real indicators and a window washer from a bus.

A couple of years after I had sold it and had gone through a few other cars my Aunty was selling her Traveller. I snapped that up. Great little estate car with real wood. A Morris 1000+

Ford Escort with 12 miles on the clock and I took my test in it that same day as my instructor had taken delivery of it.

He was quite nervous.

Re: First vehicle you drove with a manual transmission?

I think mine would have been a Nissan Micra when I was learning to drive.
My friend recommended me the driving instructor, who happned to be the dad of a girl I went to school with.

We both passed first time, so it shows you how good he was.

Re: First vehicle you drove with a manual transmission?

Great posts guys.

From my little James 125 via a Norton Jubilee 250 (LEN44) and then a Triumph 650 my mother convinced herself would be the death of me, my first car was an Austin A30 and blimey to see one now it's just amazing how small they were. Rather than that last motorbike being the death of me, I caused the death of that A30 by driving it flat out from London to Leeds at 70mph wrecking the engine.

"What's that knocking sound coming from the car Dad"

And the rest as they say, is history. 😊

Re: First vehicle you drove with a manual transmission?

First thing I drove was a Fordson Major.....age 14...just on farmland.

First on the road...triumph cub.

First vehicle.....minivan.....sliding windows, & You pulled a cord down to open the door....850cc if I remember correctly.

loved anything mechanical, even better if I found something on it to fiddle with or adjust.

Re: First vehicle you drove with a manual transmission?

Disregarding things such as old £1 scooters, building site plant and all those things you do before you're old enough to drive legally on the road, my first proper road vehicle was a 'Riley 1.5' which cost me £10 but needed the seized diff replacing.

So, with me not knowing much about cars, a friend removed the half-shafts and we towed it the few hundred yards to his house and pushed it into his garage.  I got a replacement diff from a scrapyard which ISTR cost me about £8 and fitted that myself as it was a pretty straightforward job, so add some gear oil and the car cost a total of about £20.

It had already been fitted with a replacement Gold Seal engine which I was told had only done about 5000 miles (yeah, I know) and ran really well.  Obviously acceleration wasn't up to todays standards but it was capable of reaching a good top speed, although handling wasn't matched to speed!

I remember it wouldn't start one day after work (about 15 miles from home) so myself and the mate who I gave a lift to got it to a hill to try bump-starting with no success.  At the bottom of the hill a resident who'd spotted our predicament offered some diagnostic advice and concluded the fuel pump wasn't pumping.  As it happens it was the electrical points/contacts on the pump which had failed, so I bypassed the contacts by connecting up a bit of old mains (flat twin and earth) cable to the pump, fed it through to the back seat and my mate had to keep touching/releasing the two conductors together to simulate the action of the points, but we got home OK.

Re: First vehicle you drove with a manual transmission?

@RobPN The morris 1000 I  had an electric pump too. The contacts on that burnt out  and when it stopped I used to jump out, open the bonnet and thump the pump then get back in and drive away! If I  had a passenger I got them to kick the bulkhead in the passenger side and that did the trick. All ok after I replaced the points.... Those were the days.Thumbs_UpFunny

Re: First vehicle you drove with a manual transmission?

Early day motoring there was always that fear of breaking down and one that stayed with me for years.

As a kid my Dad's old bangers (and we had many of them in those days) always seem to pack up in the middle of nowhere and we'd all stuck by the side of the road, the smell of petrol, cars whizzing by... and Dad's head under the bonnet.

Unlike now, when I first started driving and for years afterwards I always carried such things as a spare fan belt, maybe a can of petrol if you could stand the smell... and a spare clutch cable when I had a Vauxhall van!

Dad often joked about the time he was doing something under the bonnet when another car pulled up behind and the driver got out and started taking the wheels off of our car. "What the hell do you think you are doing" he yelled at him. "Well" the other guy replied, "if you're having the battery, I'm having the wheels!".
