Fed up with junk emails from unknown women.

I have a Hotmail address and I'm getting at least a couple of emails a day in my junk box from different women. The title is always Dear xxxxx-xxxxx My email address is xxxxx-xxxxx@ etc (so I suspect someone has passed on my email address. I've not opened one and I block them. They all come from a .io address. Has anybody else had this problem? Would it be better to just delete them rather than block them? Any ideas on how to stop them? Perhaps I've been lucky in that I got relatively little junk mail until now.

Re: Fed up with junk emails from unknown women.

For the past week I've started getting similar emails from a site called something like milfaholic.

Apparently my site id there is an obvious f***278 without the asterisks.

I've just added it to gmail spam. Looking in that addresses spam folder there are hundreds of emails from similar sites. All very recent.

I suppose someone has used my email address and it soon gets passed around. I used to make a point of trying to get emails deleted/removed from these places but when you do that it just confirms that it's a legit email address. It's easier to just add it to spam.

One thing that does puzzle me with the couple of dozen email addresses I have. It seems it's only the addresses that I rarely use that attracts the spam. The half a dozen main ones only get the occasional spam between them and that's it.

@shutter  Oh how I wish I could say yes to all three. I'm a pensioner, not very rich and vastly overweight!

Just block them, or do what I did when they get too much and dump hotmail altogether.

PS Do not assume they really are women either Wink

Re: Fed up with junk emails from unknown women.

Spam messages are either through random generation & sending messages out 'til they stop bouncing back, or the address in question has been compromised in some way (E.G. used on a site that got hacked & details sold to spam server operators on the dark web), as for how to stop them, when you find a way, let the world know, cos the only real way to stop spam is to abandon the address and get a new one...

As for the types of spam, be glad it's the sort you'r getting, ever since my email address got caught up in the 000webhost hack (I have web hosting with that company), I've been receiving a lot of unpleasant and highly sexual spam, at least 10 messages per day, all wanting me to click on a link (which yahoo blocks anyway), pretty disgusting behaviour by whoever stole my address...

I dumped hotmail years ago too as i was getting far too much spam there. Switched to yahoo.. just as much spam but far better features although they can be hit and miss when someone starts tinkering with them.

On topic, I keep getting tweeted by wannabe porn stars. I suppose most fellas wouldn't mind but the one who tweeted me today explicitly said she got pictures of her boobies on her main page as the pinned tweet. Got there and there was absolutely nothing. What a disgrace, she should be ashamed of herself.

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: Fed up with junk emails from unknown women.

Easiest way to block spam on Hotmail is to make your Inbox exclusive. i.e. if you haven't sent that person an email or added them to your address book, it automatically go into your spam folder. I don't get any spam in my inbox nowadays and any junk gets deleted after 9 days. You could also set up some rules.

As for unwanted graphics, I just have the settings set to use plain text for receiving emails. That way URL's of links are shown. As HTML, the fancy graphic might say for instance, 'Paypal' click here, but viewed as plain text the obvious thing you see is the real URL that the link is pointing to. Far safer.

Re: Fed up with junk emails from unknown women.

Thanks idonno. They all go into the junk box now. However there has been a change in that the four received today all came from men! I wonder if it's because I didn't reply to the women. They are still addressed as Dear XXXXX-XXXXX which is the start of my email address. My name is not hyphenated so I know it's some kind of scam.

Re: Fed up with junk emails from unknown women.

I don't have a hotmail account but I still get some to my long term personal one, but what gets me is that fact that I seem to send some of the emails to myself. In fact I've even sent myself what must be some sort of reminder as apparently my cat is soaking. I don't even have cat! But the sad thing is while there are potential victims on the net this will persist, and there is nothing you or I can do about it apart from filter them straight to the bit bucket.

Re: Fed up with junk emails from unknown women.

Have used gmail for years but have never got any porn, nigerian scams and other stuff  that has been mentioned in the above posts.

Of course I get junk mail but most is from firms I have purchased items from in the past and it's quite easy to block any stuff you do not want.

I use a second email address for registering on some sites who I suspect will bombard me with spam but with one click the lot can be deleted.

I am aware some people are not that keen on gmail for various reasons but I have had no problems using it.
