"Rag, Tag and Bobtail", and "The Woodentops" - featuring Spotty Dog - the "biggest spotty dog you ever did see".
I preferred my own children's programmes though, especially "The Magic Roundabout" and "The Clangers".

This series was my favourite, without a doubt. I did however also have an extremely soft spot for this too.

Re: Favourite Chilhood Tv Programmes/Cartoons

TV didn't exist where I was a child, but on short visits back to Blighty you could barely shift me from the rented Pye. Probably looked forward to Jackanory most, but loved all those narrated and dubbed foreign-language films. Embarrassing to say, after the Fast Show spoof, but I was entranced by The Singing Ringing Tree.
Probably weird, but I found most American cartoons distressing - way too much violence. Suppose I had just come from a war zone. I did like Top Cat (Boss Cat) though.

My Favourite Programmes when I was a child was Nightmare, The Adventure Game and Dungeons and Dragons but my older half sister watched programmes that I did not like so I never saw the TV much.

Dick Barton then later Journey into Space.
Even today I still find the theme music to Dick Barton thrilling

Re: Favourite Chilhood Tv Programmes/Cartoons

As with most people, there was no television in our house, during the 1930s and most of the 1940s.
However, I could tell you my favourite childrens' RADIO programmes, but that is not what was asked.
Now, where's my bath chair and ear trumpet?

We had one of those. Had to put a "X" on the side so that we knew where to clout it when the vertical hold went haywire! Ah, the joys of valve-tv. Waiting for 5 minutes for it to warm up and then another 10 before the b&w picture had enough contrast on it to be able to watch (relatively) clearly.

"fav prog or cartoon on tv when you were a child" doesn't specify children's prog.
The Avengers! Smitten sigh ... missed first time round, but was later greatly affected by Diana Rigg and, er, Diana Rigg. Actually, you're right, idlewis, those were adult programmes.
That's me in a reverie for the rest of the day.
