With access restricted in war zones it was impossible to verify the military briefings given to reporters and a number of those interviewed on the program deeply regretted reporting as fact things that were later shown to be clearly not true.

Standards in journalism, as in many other occupations and professions, do not appear to have improved. IMHO take whatever you see, hear, or read, with a very liberal pinch of salt, until you can verify it from another source. Of course, there are good and bad journalists...

An exercise I often set is to ask the students to read any day's Daily Mail and Independent. Find the same news story in both papers. Then try and work out the truth.
