F1 Steering problems? ? ?

Ok... F1 fanatics..... Was casually watching the Australian F1 this morning at breakfast.... and happened to notice how ineffective the steering wheel seems to be on the actual turn of the front wheels.....
In several "cockpit shots"  the driver seems to turn the steering wheel very sharply a full quarter turn (either right or left depending on the turn/corner) and the front wheels hardly seem to move from the straight ahead postition....
I know if I did that sort of action in my car at (200 kph.... ?  oops no its a skoda fabia diesel)    Cheesy Grin Cheesy  (but the principle is the same>?)  Smiley  I would end up sideways on and upside down, after rolling about 5 or 6 times.... Embarrassed
Surely the driver would be better off with more "direct" control over how much "turn" to put on the steering wheel, and be much safer too!

Re: F1 Steering problems? ? ?

depends what speed the car is going. i belive they have a box of tricks that sets the steering sensitive to the what speed the car is going. somthing like that any way. there abit more sophisticated than your skoda shutter.
boy am i glad bbc have f1 now. no more adverts Smiley . i like how hamilton made gd use of the new KERS system(Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems ). you can tell he played alot of console racers when he was a kid that boost button was second nature to him.
some great racing to come this year with the new systems and rules.
well done jenson.

Brilliant Barry, and well done the McClaren team for getting involved.

Re: F1 Steering problems? ? ?

I think it's more a case of the speed at which they take the corners. Your average family car takes corners at around 10 - 20mph, plenty of time to get enough lock on the wheel to get round there. On the other hand they're not really corners on an F1 circuit, more akin to tight bends in some cases and taking them at speeds of between 70 - 100mph, not much time for the old ten to two, ten to two...... And in most cases I think the sharp yank of the wheel is more of an attempt to correct a bit of over/understeer.
Like the Blackberry remote controller Smiley Amazing how they're digging out new uses for the accelerometers in mobile phones.

Soon husbands of politicians will be able to drive their car with their blackberry whilst ordering porn off the internet and claiming it on housing expenses... for instance  Cheesy
