Re: Evenings getting lighter

Why? Have they just turned on the festive illuminations?  Smiley
The shortest day (winter solstice) for the northern hemisphere is always on or around 21st December (and it is the 21st this year) not the 12th.
Is there something else that has to be taken into account that I have not heard of?

Re: Evenings getting lighter

www.timeanddate.com is a good web site for sunrise and sunset and you may be surprised to learn that it get lighter in the evening before the shortest day. For London this is around the 14th.

Re: Evenings getting lighter

Solar noon is that instant when the sun reaches its highest point for the day. At this time of year, the time period from one solar noon to the next is actually half a minute longer than 24 hours (the converse is true for midsummer, solar noon to solar noon is less than 24 hours). Today, on December 12, the sun reaches its noontime position at 11:54 a.m. local standard time. Ten days from now – on the winter solstice – the sun will reach its noontime position around 11:59 a.m. That’s 5 minutes later than today. Sunset is therefore later based on local midday.

it shows each day is getting shorter not longer, the time fluctuation of rise and set is corresponding to each other and the days are still getting shorter

While the length of the day is indeed getting shorter, that's because the sunrise is getting later (faster than sunset is changing)
Prior to the 12th,  the sunrise was getting later, and the sunset was getting earlier.
From the 12th, both the sunrise and sunset are getting later.
It's not until around the 30th December that the sunrise will start getting earlier!

Re: Evenings getting lighter

Interesting. I had always assumed that days shortened and lengthened at both ends at the same time. Learn something new every day!

Re: Evenings getting lighter

it's solar noon (midday) that shifts. Sunset and sunrise are more or less equal time from Solar noon.
Solar noon calculator plug your coordinates and scroll thru the months.
