Eric Pickles' office warned No 10 on benefits cap plan

Hi All
Just seen this:
[quote="BBC"]
Eric Pickles' office warned No 10 on benefits cap plan
A government department warned Downing Street that plans to cap benefits could result in 20,000 people in the UK being made homeless, it has emerged.
A letter from the office of Communities Secretary Eric Pickles in January said this meant the proposed £500-a-week cap could cost more than it saved.
The letter said other benefit changes could uproot a further 20,000 people.
Mr Pickles' spokesman said he fully supported government policies but Labour said this was not "good enough".
Plans for a maximum limit on the amount of benefits one family can claim a year from 2013 - of about £26,000 - were announced at the Conservative conference last October.
It is estimated the cap, which would apply to the combined income from benefits such as jobseekers allowance, housing benefit and council tax benefit, could result in about 50,000 families being about £93 a week worse off.
A Whitehall source told the BBC that Mr Pickles had not written the letter in question - leaked to the Observer - himself and had never raised the issues with cabinet colleagues.
The letter said the Department for Communities and Local Government supported the principle of the benefits cap "on the grounds of fairness" because it was "not right that a household on benefit should receive more than the average working household".

The DCLG agrees with the benefit caps.
Even in London £500 a week is more than enough to find suitable accommodation.  It's a disgrace that people living on benefits expect to have better standards of living to those in work.

And with the govt. having to spend money on looking after the elderly, maybe we should have those on benefits and those in prison looking after the elderly.

Or perhaps those on Benefits should perhaps take a look at their houses, look at their SKY TV Subscriptions, Broadband, Mobile phone contacts - and perhaps might have to make a few pinches - like everyone who does have to work for their since the recession.

Do you really want someone on benefits because they're incapable of looking after themselves, or some bampot doing time for murder, rape, serious assault, or whatever, looking after your granny instead?

Perhaps the elderly should simply go into prison. They would certainly be better looked after  Shocked Cry

I think what most people have in mind is if someone couldn't afford all those things before they were registered disabled or unemployed then why should they feel it's their right to get enough benefits to afford them after.

if so I'm looking forward to someone coming to install that which should rightfully be mine - wanted sky for ages but just can't afford it.

3 or four years ago Southern Cross sold all their care homes to private landlords and the directors pocketed £13 000 000, now the company has gone bust and they are saying, thats OK the local councils will look after them

Not in my book  Wink
I do think that having a cheap payg mobile is sensible but, with Freeview/Freesat available, Sky is an expensive luxury.

Re: Eric Pickles' office warned No 10 on benefits cap plan

There's a case in the papers today of a woman who has 14 children.  She receives more than £2000 a month in state handouts.  Her 15 year old daughter is pregnant.  She has found enough money to have breast enhancement surgery and also buy a sunbed and we are paying for all this.  Crazy Crazy

I'm quite confident that most if not all young people today would rather lose a limb than their mobile phone Huh
