English Anthem

A Bill was presented in Parliament today that aims to give England its own National Anthem. The Welsh and Scots have theirs and I'm not sure about the N. Irish.
It is suggested that God Save the Queen should be played at fully UK events but the individual countries National Anthem be played where the individual countries within the UK are represented - rugby internationals for example.
A poll conducted around the country concluded that Jerusalem was the first choice followed by Land of Hope and Glory.
Is this a good idea and what would you suggest is the English anthem?

Re: English Anthem

I've always liked "Jerusalem" as it's a good upbeat and reasonably paced song. It's been my favoured alternative long before there was an alternatives list.
"Land of Hope and Glory" is too dirge like and similar to GSQ for my taste.

Re: English Anthem

Cerainly have a English anthem - it seems strange at English / Scottish matches to have Flower of Scotland and God save the Queen.
Nortehn Ireland doesnt have one AFAIK - but it would need to be carefully chosen to reflect both sides of the divide

Think I'd prefer Jupiter from Holst's planet suite with the words by the British diplomat Cecil Spring Rice
I begins "I vow to thee, my country"

Re: English Anthem

Given that David Cameron wants to use the UK parliament as an England-only parliament (for bills that only affect England), I suppose it's logical that England should continue to use the UK anthem as its own?
Just joking - of course it should have its own. I wonder what the non-Christian part of the population (the majority I believe) think of 'Jerusalem'.

Probably the same as they do now with the current anthem considering the Queen and her role in the Church of England as Defender of the Faith.

You know, I was reading an article on it and thought the same thing, that or Lot 105, no lyrics to remember for that one... Grin

I need this explaining. Is the poem by Blake aimed at Christians?
