Elderly couple evicted from their home

Hi All
Seen this:
[quote="The Mirror"]
Shocking images reveal elderly couple living on the streets after being evicted from their home
The 84-year-old man and his 75-year-old partner are sleeping rough in Bournemouth after failing to pay their rent

It's an image which should shame Britain in the 21st century.
Huddled together under seafront shelter, an 84-year-old man and his 75-year-old partner are now living rough on the streets of Bournemouth.
The couple, who are not being named, are attending a local soup kitchen to be fed.
It is understood that until recently they had been living in a privately-rented home.
But following changes to their pension, they failed to pay their rent and were evicted.
Pensions are now paid electronically into bank accounts but the couple are said to dislike using debit and credit cards and internet banking and have been unable to collect their money in their usual way.
As a result they are homeless while the matter is slowly resolved.

it is a shame and not right, but there does seem to be a bit of cutting your nose off to spite your face..

The couple’s situation was recently assessed and they were offered emergency accommodation but this was refused

Re: Elderly couple evicted from their home

and if they refused accommodation the councils responsibility to house them is voided, yet no doubt they are ignoring that discretionary rule and planning to provide help anyway, all of which means they are suffering because of there own choices and not through any failure(s) in the system.
just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you

Re: Elderly couple evicted from their home

Whilst a number of us make irrational decisions at times some elderly people can be resistant to change due to fear or misunderstanding of what's happening, without knowing them or the full circumstances it is difficult to comment on any specific case.
One cynical way of looking at this is that people will be so outraged at this that the council will be forced to take action and provide them with another rented house. Equally this couple might not be able to understand the implications of their decision.
One thing you can be certain of, we will be hearing more about this case once the national papers pick it up.

I thought the state pensions were changed years ago and you either had to be paid electronically or on one of those PayPoint cards?

You're right, the 'giro' has all but died. It is only used in emergencies for things such as...

You guessed it...Homelessness!
