Re: Egon Ronay Dies

He was engaged to improve the food in BAA airports particularly at Heathrow and Gatwick, coincidently while one of the BBC Airport series was being filmed. I was one of several to be detailed to (discretely) escort him around the terminals and staff canteens for a while. I found him quite charming and down to earth. To say he wasn't impressed with what he found was putting it mildly.

I remember airport food and used to find it horrible.  It's a lot better now than it used to be.  I always enjoy a good breakfast at Stansted and Gatwick when I am flying out.
Motorway food was also dreadful but has improved a little in recent years.  it's still far to expensive though.

Re: Egon Ronay Dies

Uhmm! on one of our regular routes to one of our daughters' in Wiltshire takes us past the "Little Chef" that is allegedly looked after by super-chef (he of poisoning his guests in one of his major restaurants) Heston Blumenthal, can't say I'm that impressed with it when we've stopped there for breakfast occasionally. But at the end of the day (or is that the beginning) it is still a fast food outlet, so you get what you pay for.
Airport food is much better mostly due to the attentions of Egon Ronay.

Re: Egon Ronay Dies

There was a programme on TV about the work Heston Blumenthal was doing for Little Chef.  His plans were a little ambitious for a chain like LC IMO.  Just get the basic menu working properly.  There is too much variation between their various outlets.

Yes, I saw that. Didn't seem at all like the place we've been to, it was in the same location with the same decor, but there the resemblance mostly ends, mind you I doubt HB looks in there too often, probably only occasionally to see if the tills are working Ok.
