Edinburgh.. whats with the name?

As a kid, I have memories of seeing Edinburgh on the map however it was spelt Edinborough.or Edingborough. I definitely remember the borough bit.
What has changed and when? - When I look on the National Library of Scotland historical map it is spelled the current way.
Whats with this? - Someone must know!
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: Edinburgh.. whats with the name?

I thought one meant the castle and its immediate lee and the other meant the city + the castle, I do remember seeing something about at primary school when we were learning roman place names and what they meant .....
