Easy money

According to a recent program sub letting of property is fairly common where accommodation is expensive.
A property is rented in the normal manner, rooms are turned into bed sits and let out to unsuspecting people who assume the rent they pay is going to the landlord.
As this is a civil offence it's likely the guilty person, assuming they can be found, will get away with it and no doubt repeat the offence.
Easy money for those with little or no conscious.

Re: Easy money

the tv program was "can't pay we'll take it away" where all the tenants (8 of them i think) were evicted due to the "real" tenant not paying the rent.
they had turned a 3 bedroom semi into a 7 or 8 bedroom house.
you have to wonder though when the landlord last did an inspection of the property. clearly they hadn't been within 12 months as some of the unofficial tenants had been there for more than a year.
the landlord was clearly not being proactive enough.

Re: Easy money

the landlord lived overseas, the only thing i wondered was is this a continuation of another scam that has been prevalent in the past and was especially popular with roma communities (this comes from a documentary about it but the name of that program escapes me), they would club together and buy 2 properties in the UK, one would be used for those traveling to use as a base camp whilst they got established in the UK and the other would be owned in a single name (normally the senior elder who returned to the village immediately after the sale was completed) then a rental agreement was drawn up through a bone-fide lettings agent to one of the community that after signing it went back to their home village, those remaining in the UK would then convert the building into multi occupancy dwellings (totally illegally) they would then act as a lettings agency and rent out the rooms to groups of unsuspecting immigrants and charge huge ammounts, (bearing in mind the council are paying the original tenants rent here) then every so often when the renter fails to show up for a periodic review of their council rent payments the landlord's account would cease to show an income and legal proceedings would start to take vacant possession.
as soon as that was done another reliable member of the community would be in the council offices to sign up for benfits and prompt hot foot it home job done... the community as a whole got a share of the scam monies they evaded the council landlord checks by never having tennetns long enough and got paid for the privilidge of doing it through the benefits system ....

the only loosers were like last nights program the unsuspecting immigrants that are from a different background and have even less legal nouce than the criminal types conducting the scam.....
just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you
