Earthquake

The East Coast of the US has been hit by an earthquake and the Pentagon and Capitol Building has been evacuated in Washington. It was a 5.9 strength earthquake. One report said the White House was also evacuated. The quake was felt as far away as Boston.

10 second tremor in Philadelphia area. Not a big deal but of course the Americans are over egging the whole deal.

I can't believe people would be so daft as go on the metro: with the possibility of aftershocks the last place I'd want to be is underground

Not all of the DC metro is underground - it's quite similar to the London Underground in that respect.
Not sure I'd have liked that if it had happened about 2 months ago though whilst I was there!

It's been the worst earthquake since 1897 on this coast.
If Hurricane Irene hits this coast at the weekend this won't help the recovery.

I was talking to a friend this morning who works in the City.  He has an office in Baltimore, Maryland.  They communicate via speaker boxes and at the time of the earthquake they heard what was thought to be an explosion and the speaker boxes went silent.  The immediate thought was 9/11. It must have been a terrible thought.  Luckily communication was reestablished and Baltimore explained what had happened.
