Re: Earthquake hits New Zealand.

Very sad news from New Zealand.  They are certainly getting more trouble in that part of the world than they deserve.  I know our government has offered to help in any way they can.  Australia and the US are already helping. Our thoughts go out to everyone there.

Re: Earthquake hits New Zealand.

Yes, as hinted at in another topic, had a call from my granddaughter this morning who, together with grandson are at university in Christchurch. both are well and unhurt. Both are with many students assisting where they can with the rescue operation. Since the previous quake recently, they have had many thousands of minor tremors and shakes and have grown accustomed to them. after-shocks are continuing at this time.

Re: Earthquake hits New Zealand.

Thank you. They seem to playing down any danger they were in.
In all my trips to NZ I've never been to Christchurch -south of south island-. so am not familiar with the proximity of the university campus to the main site of the quake, but its not a vast city. However apparently they were pretty badly shaken around.
Most of NZ is affected by tremors and minor quakes (and volcanic eruptions) at one time or another in both Islands, I've certainly experienced them myself in Wellington -extreme south of north island- (high in one of Wellington's tallest buildings) although Auckland -north of north island- and the northern half of the island doesn't suffer them too much.
When seen on maps alongside Australia, New Zealand can look deceptively small...its not, it is in fact far larger than the British Isles with very extreme weather and diverse geological conditions including deserts, rain-forests perma-frosts and the southern Alps. The northern tip is just over subtropical, Stewart Island in the south is inside the Antarctic circle.

Really glad that your grandchildren are safe, Petlew  Smiley
Must have been really frightening and the sight of the cathedral bell tower is sobering.

Re: Earthquake hits New Zealand.

I'm really grateful for your good wishes gentlemen. I will try and organise that they view this thread when they can.

Of course just being in the danger area pulling at rubble with bare hands has many hazards, not the least being that after-shocks are continuing all the time. But in these circumstances concern for oneself is overtaken by the needs of others. That is just human nature.
I'm very very proud of them.

Re: Earthquake hits New Zealand.

We have deployed a 62 man search-and-rescue team and promised more help where needed.  It should arrive on Thursday to join the Australian and American units.

Yes, glad to hear your family are safe petlew. I have a friend who flew out to Auckland on Fri last week, I assume he's still on the North Island and so is ok.

Re: Earthquake hits New Zealand.

Glad to hear that your grandchildren are safe Petlew and may they remain so whilst helping in the rescue work!  They are very brave and you are right to be proud of them.
The scenes on TV are shocking.
We may well complain about the weather here but there are things far worse.

Re: Earthquake hits New Zealand.

Again, I'm welling up with the good wishes I'm getting here, my thanks to all.
Latest news I have is the non-professionals have been pulled back to allow the experts to search with specialised equipment. But a large body of students stand ready on call to help in any way they can. I like to think whatever our opinion of uni students is, that under similar circumstances the same would happen here. But it must be remembered that Christchurch is a much smaller much tighter community than we would recognise as a university city here.

Re: Earthquake hits New Zealand.

I would have thought the buildings there would have more resistant to the earthquake.
