Dyslexia

Hi All
I am Gary and yes I am Dyslexic, I want to see how many have Dyslexia!
Plus I want to find out how you cope with Dyslexia day to day.
How hard is it to go shopping for you?
Do you cope ok with packaging been changed? For example finding that jar of coffee that you want.

Re: Dyslexia

Does Dyslexia run in families - i.e. is there a genetic component to it?

Re: Dyslexia

Interesting thought - how many people with dyslexia (except in a very mild form) would take part in these or any other fora given the problems experienced.
I suspect that Gary is in a very small minority on this forum.

Re: Dyslexia

My son is in a special school for his dyslexia. He has the worst grade of dyslexia possible, and his brain cannot even differentiate shapes. It wasn't genetic, but he was starved of oxygen at birth, and so it is suspected he was slightly brain damaged. He's now 13, and has the reading age of a 5 year old. He also has issues with concentration and clumsiness, but you wouldn't know unless you asked him to read something. Following on from seeing Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy on TV last week, we got him the full 5 hour unabridged CD read by Douglas Adams himself, and the same book. He can now not only have the book read to him, he can read along and improve his vocabulary at the same time.

Re: Dyslexia

The situation is not helped when I look in the Online version of the OED.
For some reason "dsylexic" is found under the dys- (prefix) entry (together with very many other words) whilst "dyspraxia" does have it's own entry.
