Dubai: massive fire rips though 63-storey hotel close to city's firework display

Dubai: massive fire rips though 63-storey hotel close to city's big firework display
All over SKY News, Live
Many witness live phone reports, some from guests, some from adjacent buildings
They all mentioned no apparent Fire Alarms, and no sign of Sprinklers, at least not before they evacuated the Hotel.
One person had to carry his disabled Mother down stairs on his back, no regards for Women or Children from others pushing their way down the stairs.

Re: Dubai: massive fire rips though 63-storey hotel close to city's firework display

From the latest BBC Report
Quote
Officials say the fire has been brought under control and 16 people suffered mostly minor injures.
<snip>
The Dubai government tweeted that 14 people had suffered minor injuries, one moderate injuries and one "heart attack case" due to "overcrowding and smoke at the fire site".
The fire had started on the 20th floor, officials said, and had not spread inside the building, they claimed.

So it would appear that the systems - whatever they were - worked despite apparent panic
From your own link
Quote
A Dubai Media Office spokesperson said: "The fire at the Address Downtown reported to have originated from outside 20th floor of hotel, has not spread inside.
"Internal fire extinguishers are preventing spread of fire inside the hotel.
As an aside I was listening to the early Sky News and they interviewed a UK resident in Dubai and the first question he was asked was where are you - answer in England

Briton Carries Mum Out Of Burning Dubai Hotel
http://news.sky.com/story/1614901/briton-carries-mum-out-of-burning-dubai-hotel
A Briton has told how he had to carry his mother out of a burning Dubai hotel while "people were shoving each other down the stairs and climbing over each other" to get out of the building.
Quote
"It was slightly worrying that the alarm went off essentially when the building was properly on fire," he said.
"You'd expect people to let women and children go first, but it was pretty much people shoving each other down the stairs and climbing over each other.

From February 2015.....

A fire has swept through the Torch skyscraper in Dubai, one of the tallest residential buildings in the world.
No casualties reported

She did say it was quite an old, not very well constructed building, and fire alarms were always going off, with false alarms.

Quote from: Oddball

Old? Torch Tower opened in 2011

She thought it was older than that, due to its general appearance and the state of its interior !!
Perhaps corners were cut in its delayed construction ?

Wiki:
In April 2007, the project was running 18 months behind schedule, with the tower's foundations still under construction.
The original expected completion date of June 2008 had been extended to late 2009, with the further extension into 2011.
The Marina Torch was opened in May 2011.

Latest:
External cladding on building's corners was 'charred black and mangled'
One British resident said 'piece of burning cladding' fell on her shoulder
Same external material blamed for another Dubai fire in November 2012

Not necessarily the same cause, but it makes you think !
3 fires in three years.

hubris coming back to bite them on the bum.  don't really need the fireworks now, not with a spectacular fire warming things up.

Flippant comment/
Shades of a real life "Towering Inferno"
Where was Steve McQueen when he was needed?
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.
